Portland Timbers

Providence Park in the Goose Hollow neighborhood of Portland buzzes with noise every time the Portland Timbers take the field. Since the franchise launched as an MLS expansion team in 2011, this venue has hosted sell-out crowds often exceeding 20,000 spectators. The club operates as a phoenix organization founded in 2009 to revive the legacy of the original North American Soccer League squad that played from 1975 to 1982.

Merritt Paulson and Peregrine Sports steer the ship, bringing stability that allowed the team to expand its family by launching the Portland Thorns FC in 2012. That women's team has since won multiple NWSL championships, cementing Portland as a soccer powerhouse in the Pacific Northwest. On the pitch, the Timbers claimed their first major trophy in 2015 when they defeated the Columbus Crew 2–1 in overtime during the MLS Cup final.

Their success continued with another championship victory at the MLS is Back Tournament in 2020. They returned to the MLS Cup final in both 2018 and 2021 but finished as runners-up on those occasions. Recent matches in September 2026 show the team navigating a competitive Western Conference schedule, including a 2–1 loss to FC Dallas and a 2–2 draw against St. Louis City SC while forward Kristoffer Velde enjoyed a strong stretch of form. The modern era began in 2011 when the club joined Major League Soccer as an expansion team. Caleb Porter took the helm as head coach in 2013 and guided the squad to their first playoff berth and CONCACAF Champions League qualification in 2013. His tenure culminated in the historic 2015 MLS Cup victory, making the Timbers the first Cascadian team to win the league title.

Giovanni Savarese assumed control in 2019 and became the longest-tenured manager in the club's modern history. He led the team to the MLS Cup final again in 2021. Other figures who have managed the franchise include Phil Neville, Miles Joseph, and Martí Cifuentes. The organization also secured the Supporters' Shield in 2018 after winning the regular season.

Rivalry runs deep within the region through the Cascadia Cup competition against Seattle Sounders FC and Vancouver Whitecaps FC. These annual matchups define the local culture, supported by groups like the Timbers Army who create a deafening atmosphere at home games. [edit]
