    About

Founded in 1876 within the Burslem district of Stoke-on-Trent, Port Vale F.C. stands as one of England's oldest professional football clubs. The organization took its name from the canal ports along the Trent and Mersey waterway that traverse the local valley. As a founding member of the Football League Second Division in 1892, the club established itself early on, yet it holds the unique distinction of playing more seasons in the league than any other team without ever reaching the top flight.

The squad currently competes in EFL League Two, the fourth tier of English football. Their home matches take place at Vale Park, a ground that opened in 1950 after replacing the Athletic Ground and Old Recreation Ground. A statue of Roy Sproson greets visitors at the entrance, commemorating his record 842 appearances between 1953 and 1969. This longevity defines the club's identity, which fans often describe as the "people's club" of the lower leagues.

Recent campaigns have seen the team navigate both resilience and high-profile setbacks. In October 2026, they secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Grimsby Town to demonstrate defensive solidity. Later that year, the FA Cup brought a heavy 7-0 defeat against Chelsea in April, while an August fixture saw them lose 3-0 to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Despite these results, the club remains a staple of the EFL community structure.

    History

The club began play in 1876 as Burslem Port Vale before adopting its current name. They joined the Football League Second Division in 1892 and spent decades moving between the second and third tiers. Their most significant trophy win came in 1993 when they claimed the Football League Trophy. A major resurgence occurred in 2008 when winning the Conference National title returned them to the Football League system.

Management has seen frequent changes throughout the years. John Askey served multiple stints, while Darrell Clarke led the team during recent League One campaigns. Other figures like Danny Pugh, Andy Crosby, Will Ryder, Darren Moore, Nathan Rooney, Neil Aspin, Chris Morgan, and Michael Brown have all held the position. By the 2026 season, Michael Brown had taken charge following various tenures by previous coaches.

The squad for the 2026 season includes experienced professionals and academy graduates. Midfielder Craig suffered an ACL injury in September 2026 that ruled him out for the remainder of the campaign. The team relies on developing talent within the lower leagues rather than purchasing established stars.
