Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais

Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais, known across Brazil simply as PUC Minas, is a private, non-profit Catholic university headquartered in Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais state. It is the largest Catholic university in the world, a designation granted by the Vatican's Congregation for Catholic Education. The institution is maintained by the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte, giving it a distinct ecclesiastical character while operating as a modern, comprehensive university.

PUC Minas enrolls more than 60,000 students across seven campuses in Minas Gerais, with roughly one-third on the main campus in Belo Horizonte. It offers 105 bachelor's degree programs, including two taught at a distance, along with 11 undergraduate courses and a wide range of graduate degrees. The university has earned national recognition for its quality, being named the best private university in Brazil five times: in 2006, 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2014. It has also been elected six times by the Student Guide (Editora Abril) as the best private university in the country.

PUC Minas is the only private institution in Minas Gerais listed in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Its research output spans fields from paleontology to oral surgery. Brazilian researchers affiliated with the university helped identify a new species of "terror bird" that lived in Bahia's interior around 25,000 years ago, and a 2023 paper from its Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery examined surgical manipulation of the occlusal plane in Class III deformities. PUC Minas traces its origins to the late 1940s, when the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte established separate founding faculties of law, philosophy, science, and mining between 1948 and 1949. These schools formally united in 1958 to create the Catholic University of Minas Gerais. The Vatican granted pontifical status in 1983, renaming the institution to its current title and affirming its ecclesiastical character.

Since then, the university has expanded its campus network across the state, adding locations in cities such as Poços de Caldas and Betim. It has grown to enroll more than 60,000 students, making it one of the five largest universities in Brazil. Over the decades, PUC Minas has consistently ranked among the country's top private universities, earning national accolades and international recognition.
