About
Politico Europe is the European arm of the American news outlet Politico, focused on European Union politics, policy, and the workings of EU institutions. Launched in April 2015 as a joint venture between Politico and the German publisher Axel Springer SE, it brought a scoop-driven, insider-focused style of journalism to Brussels, a market previously dominated by more institutional outlets. The publication is headquartered in Brussels, with additional offices in London, Berlin, Warsaw, Paris, and Frankfurt. It covers EU affairs in depth, from trade and tech regulation to climate policy and defense, and also reports on national politics in key member states.
Politico Europe operates a free news website, Politico.eu, and a premium subscription service, Politico Pro, which provides specialized policy intelligence across beats such as trade, tech, energy, agriculture, defense, and healthcare. Its events division hosts conferences and summits that bring together policymakers, industry leaders, and journalists. The publication is known for its influential newsletters, including Brussels Playbook, London Playbook, and Berlin Playbook, which are widely read by EU insiders. With a staff of roughly 150 to 200, Politico Europe has become a dominant force in EU political journalism, often breaking stories that shape the policy debate.
Mission
Politico Europe aims to provide authoritative, non-partisan news and analysis on European politics and policy, serving as an essential daily read for policymakers, diplomats, business leaders, and anyone who needs to understand EU decision-making. Its mission is to inform and influence the conversation in Brussels and beyond through rigorous reporting, scoops, and insider perspectives.
History
Politico Europe was conceived in 2014 as a joint venture between the American news outlet Politico and the German publisher Axel Springer SE. The venture was announced in September 2014, with Axel Springer acquiring a 50% stake for an undisclosed sum, reported to be in the tens of millions of euros. The founding CEO, Shéhérazade Semsar de Boisséson, a former Financial Times executive, led the launch team. The website and a weekly print edition debuted in April 2015, aiming to fill a gap for high-quality, non-partisan coverage of EU institutions.
In 2015, Politico Europe acquired Development Institute International (DII), a conference organizer, to expand its events business. The following year, it launched Politico Pro, a subscription service that became a core revenue driver. The Brussels Playbook newsletter, launched in 2017, quickly became a must-read for EU insiders, setting a template for subsequent Playbooks in London (2018), Berlin (2019), and Warsaw (2021). The publication expanded its geographic footprint with bureaus in London, Berlin, Warsaw, and Paris, and added specialized Pro coverage areas.
In October 2021, Axel Springer acquired full ownership of Politico (including the US and Europe) for over $1 billion, making Politico Europe a wholly owned subsidiary. Stephen Brown served as editor-in-chief from 2020 to 2023, overseeing a period of growth. Jamil Anderlini succeeded him in August 2023. In 2023, the publication underwent a small round of layoffs as part of broader cost-cutting. As of 2024, Politico Europe continues to expand its Pro offerings, data journalism, and video content, while maintaining its position as the leading source for EU policy news.
