Politico
United States"The digital newspaper covering politics and policy in the US and globally."
About
Politico, stylized as POLITICO, launched on January 23, 2007, with a simple premise: cover politics like sports. Founders John F. Harris and Jim VandeHei, both former Washington Post reporters, wanted to create a fast-paced, digitally native outlet that could deliver granular, insider-driven reporting faster than traditional newspapers. Backed by banker and media heir Robert Allbritton, the site went live with a small team that included Mike Allen, the first hire, who would go on to create the influential Playbook newsletter.
Today Politico operates as a for-profit subsidiary of German media giant Axel Springer SE, which acquired the company in October 2021 for a reported $1 billion. The organization employs roughly 1,100 people across offices in Arlington, Virginia (world headquarters), Washington D.C., Brussels, London, Paris, Berlin, Sacramento, and New York. It publishes dedicated editions for the US, Europe, the UK, and Canada, and its subscription product POLITICO Pro serves policy professionals with real-time legislative tracking and analysis.
Politico has been called the most successful digital media startup of its generation. Its Playbook newsletter, read daily by White House staff and congressional leaders, functions as a kind of public signal board for the political class. The outlet's focus on the mechanics of power, lobbying, campaign strategy, regulatory maneuvering, has made it indispensable for insiders while occasionally drawing criticism for its cozy relationship with the establishment it covers.
Mission
Politico aims to provide fast-paced, authoritative coverage of politics and policy for decision-makers and engaged citizens. Its mission is to deliver journalism that is both urgent and sustainable, proving that quality political reporting can thrive in the digital age. The outlet prioritizes insider access, data-driven analysis, and a style that treats politics as a competitive sport, revealing strategies, power shifts, and the people behind the headlines.
History
Politico launched on January 23, 2007, as a digital-first experiment. Its founders, John Harris and Jim VandeHei, had grown frustrated with the slow pace of traditional newspapers. They convinced Robert Allbritton, heir to a banking fortune, to fund a lean, fast-moving outlet that would publish multiple times a day. The first hire was Mike Allen, who brought with him a deep network of White House sources. The site originally carried the name The Politico before dropping the definite article.
Within a few years, Politico had established itself as a Washington institution. Its Playbook newsletter, launched in 2007, became a daily ritual for the political class. The outlet expanded into Europe in 2015 with the launch of Politico Europe, based in Brussels. In December 2020, Politico acquired E&E News, a trade publication covering energy and the environment.
In October 2021, Axel Springer SE completed its acquisition of Politico from Robert Allbritton for roughly $1 billion. The deal marked the end of Allbritton's ownership and brought Politico under the umbrella of a large European media conglomerate. Goli Sheikholeslami was appointed global CEO in October 2022. As of early 2025, the organization employs about 1,100 people and continues to expand its coverage of global politics.
