Police Simulator: Patrol Officers
"Serve and protect in the city of Brighton."
Overview
Police Simulator: Patrol Officers puts you behind the wheel of a patrol car in the fictional American city of Brighton. Developed by Munich-based Aesir Interactive and published by Astragon Entertainment, the simulation game trades high-octane shootouts for the mundane but methodical reality of day-to-day law enforcement. You start each shift at the station, pick your district, and then head out to write parking tickets, conduct traffic stops, and respond to dispatch calls for everything from noise complaints to fender benders. A citation-or-warning system lets you judge each violation, while a rule-of-law meter tracks how well you follow procedure. The game deliberately avoids lethal force, focusing instead on de-escalation and community interaction.
Brighton is a living city with a day-night cycle, dynamic weather, and AI pedestrians that react to your presence. As you gain experience, you unlock new districts, vehicles, and equipment. The sandbox career mode has no scripted story, so the narrative emerges from your daily encounters. The game launched into Steam Early Access on June 17, 2021, and hit full release on Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on November 10, 2022. PlayStation 4 and 5 versions arrived on June 22, 2023. It also landed on Xbox Game Pass for console and PC.
Critical reception was a mixed bag. PC and Xbox versions hold Metacritic scores of 67 and 73 respectively. IGN gave it a 6/10, praising the authentic police work but criticizing repetition and bugs. GameSpot also gave a 6/10, calling the pace relaxing but the interactions shallow. PC Gamer scored it 68/100, calling it a solid foundation with clunky controls. Push Square on PS5 scored 6/10, highlighting glitches and tedious repetition. XboxEra was more generous at 7.5/10, praising the addictive loop. Common praise centered on the commitment to realistic, non-violent procedures, while criticism focused on AI inconsistencies, repetitive mission design, and persistent bugs.
Sales figures haven't been publicly detailed, but Astragon announced in 2023 that the game had sold well over 500,000 copies across all platforms. It has also performed consistently on Xbox Game Pass, often appearing in the Most Played charts. The game's commercial success is attributed to a dedicated niche audience for simulation titles. It received nominations for Best Simulation Game and Best Family Game at the 2022 German Developer Awards. Post-launch support has been robust, with free updates and paid DLCs including the Highway Patrol Expansion (2023), Community Policing DLC (2024), Metro Transit DLC (2024), and Narcotics Unit DLC (2024). Cooperative multiplayer for up to 2 players on PC and up to 4 on consoles was added in a 2023 update, with cross-play between Xbox and Windows.
Gameplay
Each shift in Police Simulator: Patrol Officers begins at the Brighton police station, where you choose your patrol vehicle and district. Core activities include issuing parking tickets for expired meters, fire hydrant blocking, or handicapped spot misuse; conducting traffic stops for speeding, broken taillights, or running red lights; and responding to dispatch calls for accidents, noise complaints, or disturbances. The citation-or-warning system requires you to assess each violation and decide on an appropriate response. A rule-of-law meter rewards proper procedure and penalizes excessive force or illegal searches. You can inspect vehicles for registration, run license plates, and administer field sobriety tests. The game intentionally avoids lethal force scenarios, focusing on de-escalation and community interaction. As you progress, you unlock new districts, vehicles, and equipment. The dynamic day-night cycle and weather system affect gameplay, such as reduced visibility during rain. On PC, you can adjust draw distance, texture quality, shadow resolution, and anti-aliasing. Xbox Series X and PS5 versions target 60 fps with dynamic 1440p resolution, while last-gen consoles run at 30 fps.
Story
There isn't a traditional narrative or story campaign. Instead, the game offers a sandbox career mode where you create your own officer and work your way up through the ranks of the Brighton Police Department. The story is emergent, driven by your daily interactions with citizens, traffic violators, and accident scenes. The world is designed to simulate a living city with a day-night cycle, dynamic weather, and AI-driven pedestrians and vehicles that react to your presence. There are no central antagonists or plot arcs; the focus is entirely on your personal journey as a patrol officer.
