Police Scotland

Police Scotland, known in Scottish Gaelic as Poileas Alba, is the national police service for Scotland. It was established in 2013 by merging eight regional forces along with specialist units from the Scottish Police Services Authority, including the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency. The move also led to the disbanding of the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland, though it wasn't formally absorbed. Today, Police Scotland is the second-largest territorial force in the UK by officer numbers, after the Metropolitan Police, and covers the largest geographic area of any UK force. The chief constable reports to the Scottish Police Authority, and the force is subject to inspection by His Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary in Scotland. Other police forces also operate within Scotland's borders, each with specific remits. The Ministry of Defence Police, British Transport Police, and Civil Nuclear Constabulary handle their respective areas. The Metropolitan Police and the National Crime Agency hold some jurisdiction too, particularly for royal protection, counter-terrorism, and serious organized crime.
