    Overview

Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves are the first installments of the tenth generation of the Pokémon video game series. Developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, these titles are slated for a simultaneous worldwide release in 2027, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement on February 27, 2026, coincided with the franchise's 30th anniversary, generating significant excitement following a major data leak from Game Freak's servers in 2024 that had revealed information about the games in development.

The games are set in a tropical archipelago region inspired by Southeast Asia, featuring a large number of islands with accessible underwater areas. The official synopsis describes "beautiful windswept islands and a vast ocean with glittering waves that ebb and flow," where Pokémon have developed unique ecosystems living in harmony with the region's lush environment. The region appears to be connected by seasonal wind patterns and ocean currents, with players able to explore land, sea, and sky with seamless transitions.

    Gameplay

The core gameplay retains the familiar turn-based battles and creature collection that fans expect, but introduces several new mechanics. The region is presented as an open world, encouraging exploration where players team up with their Pokémon companions to overcome environmental obstacles and natural forces. A new battle mechanic, Tenko-Waza, or "Weather Moves," is set to dynamically influence wild Pokémon spawns and battle conditions. Each version of the game will feature exclusive Pokémon tied to specific themes: Pokémon Winds will focus on Flying- and Electric-types, while Pokémon Waves will emphasize Water- and Ice-types. Leaked information also suggests a new Seed Pokémon system, where unevolved forms of rare Pokémon can be found and evolve under specific conditions related to legendary Pokémon and their habitats. Reports indicate that all Pokémon will be rideable or touchable within the game world, further enhancing player interaction and immersion in the expansive environments.

Exploration is a key focus, with emphasis placed on the beautiful windswept islands and the vast ocean. Leaked details hint at the possibility of an MMO lobby system, allowing for greater player interaction. Players will be able to explore underwater areas and potentially procedurally generated islands, adding significant replayability and discovery to the game world. The seamless transition between land, sea, and sky aims to create a truly immersive open-world experience, allowing players to traverse the archipelago with unprecedented freedom.

    Story

The narrative centers on a young trainer thrust into a conflict between two distinct factions: the Windkeepers, who master travel through aerial currents, and the Tideseekers, who excel in underwater navigation. The player character's appearance will differ slightly between the two versions, with unique outfits designed for Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves. A local child from a resort island serves as the protagonist's rival, possessing deep knowledge of Pokémon and the natural world. Players will also interact with a 21-year-old professor researching the intricate relationship between weather phenomena and Pokémon behavior.

The plot involves a hotel group chairman, whose initial desire for coexistence between humans and Pokémon turned to animosity after the death of their child. This grief fuels the actions of the chairman's heir, an executive within the organization, whose older brother has also passed away. Opposing these figures is the "Land Development Team," an antagonistic group focused on destroying natural habitats and expanding land for profit, creating a complex conflict that players must navigate.
