    Overview

Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket (often called Pokémon TCG Pocket) is a free-to-play mobile adaptation of the classic Pokémon Trading Card Game. Developed by Creatures Inc. and DeNA, it launched worldwide on October 30, 2024 after a soft launch in New Zealand on September 26. The game streamlines the TCG experience for phones: decks are 20 cards instead of 60, and you only need three prize cards to win. Energy cards are auto-generated each turn, so you can focus on strategy. A daily free booster pack keeps casual collectors coming back, while the Wonder Pick mechanic lets you snag a random card from another player's recent pack opening for a small in-game fee.

The game's standout feature is Immersive Cards, special digital cards that trigger a full 3D cinematic sequence when played, pulling the camera into the artwork. The base set, Genetic Apex, launched with over 220 cards including immersive versions of Charizard, Mewtwo, and Pikachu. Two expansions followed quickly: Mythical Island in December 2024 added 80 cards featuring Mew and Celebi, and Space-Time Smackdown in January 2025 brought 140 cards from the Diamond & Pearl era. A mini-set, Triumphant Light, dropped February 2025 with 75 Arceus-themed cards.

Reviews have been generally positive, with an 80/100 Metacritic score. Critics praised the accessibility and visual polish, but many pointed out the aggressive free-to-play monetization and limited trading system. Despite that, the game became a commercial juggernaut: over 100 million downloads and $500 million in revenue by February 2025. It was nominated for Best Mobile Game at The Game Awards 2024 and won Google Play's Best Game award in several regions. The community has grown rapidly on Reddit and Discord, where players share deck lists and pack-opening videos.

    Gameplay

Each match is quick, usually 10 to 15 minutes. You build a 20-card deck from your collection, then face an opponent in real time. Energy is handled automatically: every turn you get one Energy card generated from your deck, attached to a Pokémon of your choice. This removes the need to include Energy cards in your deck, letting you focus on Pokémon and Trainer cards. The first player to take three prize cards wins. A ranked mode called VS Ladder runs in seasons, offering rewards like hourglasses and exclusive card cosmetics.

Outside of battles, the core loop is opening packs. You get two free booster packs per day: one standard and one bonus pack that resets after a timer. You can buy additional packs with Poké Gold, which you earn slowly or purchase with real money. The Wonder Pick feature shows you a selection of cards from another player's recent pack opening; you choose one at random for a small cost. Trading with friends requires both players to spend Trade Tokens, earned through events or bought, and you can only swap cards of identical rarity. This system has been controversial because it limits how often you can trade.

    Story

Pokémon TCG Pocket doesn't have a story mode or narrative campaign. There's no single-player quest, no gym leaders to defeat, no villain to thwart. The game is purely about collecting and battling. The missions and events that pop up are all gameplay challenges: win a certain number of battles, open a certain number of packs, or collect specific cards. The closest thing to story progression is unlocking new Immersive Cards, which offer short animated scenes, but these are just artistic showcases, not plot.
