Pokémon Sword and Shield, the first entries in the eighth generation of the Pokémon series, launched on Nintendo Switch in November 2019. Developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, these role-playing games take players to the Galar region, a land inspired by the United Kingdom. The core loop remains familiar: catch, train, and battle Pokémon while challenging eight Gym Leaders to earn the right to face the Champion. But Sword and Shield introduce new mechanics like Dynamax and Gigantamax, which temporarily super-size Pokémon for powerful attacks. The games also support a new Wild Area, an open-zone space where players can freely explore, encounter wild Pokémon, and team up in Max Raid Battles.

The story follows a young Trainer who, alongside rival Hop, receives a starter Pokémon from Professor Magnolia. Together they enter the Gym Challenge, competing against other trainers while uncovering a plot involving the mysterious energy known as Dynamax. The narrative is straightforward, typical of the series, but the Galar region's industrial cities, rolling countryside, and snowy mountains offer visual variety. Notably, Sword and Shield were the first mainline Pokémon games to receive paid downloadable content: the Isle of Armor expansion in June 2020 and the Crown Tundra in October 2020, adding new areas, Pokémon, and storylines.

Upon announcement, the games sparked controversy when Game Freak confirmed that not all previous Pokémon could be transferred into Sword and Shield, a restriction fans dubbed "Dexit." Despite this backlash, the titles sold over 27 million copies worldwide by December 2025, making them the third best-selling Pokémon games. Critics praised the streamlined gameplay and the Wild Area's freedom, though some noted the main story felt short. Players control a young Trainer exploring the Galar region, capturing and battling Pokémon. New to this generation are Dynamax and Gigantamax, which allow Pokémon to grow to enormous size for three turns, gaining boosted stats and powerful moves. The Wild Area serves as an open-zone hub with dynamic weather and visible Pokémon spawns, a departure from the series' traditional route-based design. Here, players can participate in Max Raid Battles, cooperative four-player encounters against Dynamax or Gigantamax wild Pokémon. The Rotom Bike replaces the usual bicycle and can travel across water. Quality-of-life improvements include the ability to access Pokémon Boxes from anywhere, and the Poké Jobs system lets players send Pokémon on temporary tasks for experience and items. The player character, a young Trainer from the town of Postwick, receives a starter Pokémon from Professor Magnolia and sets off on the Gym Challenge alongside their rival Hop. The journey takes them across Galar, where they defeat Gym Leaders and encounter Team Yell, initially appearing as rowdy fans but later revealed to be supporting Hop's brother, Champion Leon. The true antagonist is Chairman Rose, who seeks to harness the energy of the legendary Pokémon Eternatus to solve an energy crisis, inadvertently unleashing the Darkest Day, a calamity involving rampant Dynamax energy. With the help of the legendary Zacian (in Sword) or Zamazenta (in Shield), the player defeats Eternatus and restores order.
