    Overview

Pokémon Pokopia is a social simulation game and the first life-simulation title in the Pokémon franchise. Co-developed by Game Freak and Koei Tecmo's Omega Force, and published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, it launched exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 on March 5, 2026. The game stars a Ditto that can transform into a human-like form, using its shapeshifting ability to rebuild a post-apocalyptic world and create a utopia for Pokémon. Critics have described it as a spiritual blend of Minecraft, Viva Piñata, and Animal Crossing.

The game was conceived by Shigeru Ohmori, director of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, who wanted fans to experience cultivating their own Pokémon habitats. Game Freak partnered with Omega Force specifically because of the studio's sandbox game expertise, particularly on Dragon Quest Builders 2. The game runs on the Katana Engine and requires a full download via internet, with a game-key card needed for play.

Pokémon Pokopia received highly positive reviews, earning a Metascore of 89 on Metacritic based on 114 critic reviews—making it the highest-rated Pokémon game on the platform at release. IGN gave it a 9/10, calling it an enjoyable building and town simulator that capitalizes on the charming personalities of its monsters. The game sold 2.2 million copies over its launch weekend, including 1 million in Japan alone, despite supply constraints for physical versions. A free update adding underwater exploration released on June 9, 2026, and a three-part paid DLC expansion pass is planned, with the first part, Bubbly Basin, arriving in August 2026.

    Gameplay

Players control a Ditto that can transform into other characters, both Pokémon and human, to rebuild a desolate island. Core mechanics include crafting items and furniture, growing crops, gathering materials, terraforming, and decorating spaces. Ditto can learn moves from other Pokémon to change the land and travel—for example, transforming into a Lapras to surf across water, into a Dragonite to glide through the sky, or using Bulbasaur's Leafage to make wild grass grow.

The game balances a guided narrative-driven experience with a free-form bonus biome that allows unrestricted exploration, construction, and Pokémon attracting—similar to Animal Crossing. The main campaign is extraordinarily guided, while the additional area offers more sandbox-style gameplay. Players can invite Pokémon and friends to visit their created paradise in multiplayer.

    Story

The game's narrative begins in a post-apocalyptic world where humans have vanished and Pokémon are scarce. Players awaken as a Ditto that has transformed into a human-like form after a long slumber. The only remaining resident is a lone Professor Tangrowth, who has been living alone in the wasteland wearing human tools. Seeing the withered grass and trees, Ditto decides to rebuild the area by crafting items and learning moves from other Pokémon, creating a utopia step by step.

The main story revolves around completing requests from new island residents, ranging from simple tasks like feeding berries to Pokémon to complex, hours-long adventures that restore desolate areas like a cloud-covered harbor back to a sunny seaside town. Players build homes, farm ingredients, plant flowers, craft furniture, and terraform the land while uncovering the narrative.
