Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is a 2025 action role-playing game developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. It is the second entry in the Pokémon Legends sub-series, following Pokémon Legends: Arceus (2022), and serves as a sequel to the sixth-generation titles Pokémon X and Y (2013). The game takes place entirely within Lumiose City in the Kalos region, set five years after the events of X and Y, during an urban redevelopment project led by a company called Quasartico, Inc.

The game's central premise involves reshaping Lumiose City into a place where people and Pokémon can coexist. A sudden rash of wild Pokémon invading the city has necessitated Wild Zones — designated areas where Pokémon live separately from humans. During nighttime, Battle Zones appear for the Z-A Royale, a tournament where trainers can challenge each other. The player's goal is to advance from Rank Z to Rank A through promotion battles to have a wish granted.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A was announced in February 2024 and released on 16 October 2025 to generally positive reviews. Critics praised the innovative real-time battle system and character writing, but found the city setting visually restricting. Pokémon Legends: Z-A introduces a revolutionary real-time battle system, departing from the series' traditional turn-based combat. Trainers and their Pokémon move in real time during battles, and Pokémon unleash moves when their trainers command them via face buttons. Considerations for timing, positioning, and move launch times add depth alongside type matchups. This system makes gameplay feel closer to being a trainer in the Pokémon world, similar to the anime.

Key gameplay elements include Wild Zones during daytime, Battle Zones at night for the Z-A Royale tournament, and a rank system where players progress from Rank Z to Rank A through promotion battles. Rogue Mega Evolution fights pit players against powerful Pokémon undergoing Mega Evolution with enhanced abilities. The dense city environment offers numerous side quests and hidden items for exploration. Connectivity with Pokémon HOME allows transferring Pokémon between compatible titles, and Pokémon can be brought into Pokémon Champions. [edit]

The narrative follows a young adult protagonist who arrives in Lumiose City via train with no clear agenda beyond casual tourism. The protagonist is immediately adopted by Team MZ, a group dedicated to protecting the city by day. The story is civic-minded, centered around training to protect the city rather than simply becoming stronger or filling a Pokédex.

Key characters include Jett, CEO of Quasartico Inc.; Mable, acting director of the Pokémon Research Lab; Emma, the city's best detective; Vinnie, Jett's secretary; Lida, a dance school student with a Staryu; and Naveen, an aspiring fashion designer with a Scraggy. The plot wrestles with real-world ideas about coexistence between people and Pokémon, and who should be prioritized when their needs conflict. The legendary Pokémon Zygarde plays a significant role.
