Pokémon Go
United States"Explore the real world, discover Pokémon."
Overview
Pokémon Go is an augmented reality (AR) mobile game that blends the familiar Pokémon universe with the real world. This free-to-play, location-based game, available on iOS and Android devices, encourages players to step outside and explore their physical surroundings to find, catch, train, and battle virtual Pokémon.
Upon its initial release, Pokémon Go quickly became a global sensation. Critics often found the game enjoyable despite some technical issues, praising its innovative use of AR, its ability to promote physical activity, and its strong social elements. It rapidly became one of the most popular and profitable mobile apps, accumulating over 500 million downloads worldwide by late 2016 and surpassing 1 billion downloads by early 2019. The game is widely recognized for popularizing location-based and augmented reality technology in mainstream mobile gaming.
The game's immense popularity also brought challenges, including reports of accidents and public disturbances as players became engrossed in the experience. Some governments expressed security concerns and implemented regulations for its use in specific areas. Despite these issues, Pokémon Go has maintained a significant cultural impact, blurring the lines between the digital and physical worlds and fostering a unique community among players.
Originally developed and published by Niantic, Inc., in partnership with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, the game saw a significant change on March 12, 2025. Scopely announced its acquisition of Niantic's games business, including Pokémon Go, with the deal officially closing on May 29, 2025. Following this acquisition, Scopely now serves as the parent company, with the original Niantic game development teams continuing their work under the Scopely banner.
Gameplay
Pokémon Go uses your smartphone's GPS and camera to bring Pokémon into the real world. As a Trainer, you walk around to find wild Pokémon appearing on your in-game map at real-world locations. To catch a Pokémon, you flick a Poké Ball on your screen towards the creature, with success depending on timing and the type of Poké Ball used.
Players collect items called "Candy" and "Stardust" to evolve and power up their Pokémon, increasing their Combat Power (CP). "PokéStops" are often located at real-world landmarks and provide essential items like Poké Balls, Potions, and Eggs. "Gyms," also tied to real-world spots, are where Trainers can battle their Pokémon. You choose one of three teams—Team Mystic, Team Valor, or Team Instinct—and compete to control these Gyms.
The game also features "Raid Battles," where multiple players can team up to defeat powerful "Raid Boss" Pokémon. For competitive play, the "Go Battle League" offers player-versus-player (PvP) combat. A friends system allows players to trade Pokémon, send gifts, and gain in-game bonuses. The "Party Play" feature, introduced in October 2023, lets up to four Trainers (Level 21 or higher) play together for an hour, completing challenges and getting benefits in raids while physically near each other.
Story
The story in Pokémon Go is not a traditional linear narrative, but rather an evolving journey guided by Professor Willow, who helps players learn game mechanics and complete research tasks. Initially, the game focused on the player's quest to become a Pokémon Master, with minimal overarching plot.
Over time, more narrative elements have been woven into the game through "Special Research" quests. These storylines have included the appearance of mythical Pokémon like Hoopa, the arrival of mysterious Ultra Beasts, and even Professor Willow's temporary disappearance. These elements serve to provide context for the introduction of new Pokémon generations and various in-game events, enriching the player's ongoing adventure.
