The PlayStation 5, Sony's ninth-generation home console, launched in November 2020 to widespread demand. It arrived in two configurations: the standard model with a 4K UHD Blu-ray disc drive and the Digital Edition without one, priced at $499 and $399 respectively. The console's defining feature is its custom 825GB SSD, which delivers read speeds of 5.5 GB/s and effectively eliminates loading screens in most games. The DualSense controller introduced haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, offering tactile sensations that vary from the tension of drawing a bow to the texture of driving on gravel. The system also supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing, 4K resolution at up to 120 frames per second, and Tempest 3D AudioTech for spatial sound through headphones or TV speakers.

Since launch, Sony has released multiple hardware revisions. A smaller Slim model arrived in November 2023, featuring a 1TB SSD, a detachable disc drive, and a reduced footprint. The PS5 Pro followed in October 2024, equipped with a 45% faster GPU, 2TB storage, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling, at a price of $699.99. All models maintain backward compatibility with the vast majority of PS4 games, and many receive performance boosts through Game Boost mode.
