George Fan designed this tower defense hit to let players defend their suburban home against an endless stream of brain-eating zombies. The game launched on May 5, 2009, and quickly became a cultural touchstone by mixing strategy with genuine humor. You plant various flora along five parallel lanes to stop enemies from reaching your house. If even one zombie gets through, the level ends immediately. Players manage sun currency generated by sunflowers or falling from the sky to buy offensive units like Peashooters or defensive barriers like Wall-nuts.

For instance, Pole-Vaulters jump over fences while Gargoyles fly over walls. The game features a "Last Stand" survival mode where resources are limited, forcing players to prioritize efficiency. Crazy Dave discovers his neighbor's lawn is infested with zombies seeking brains. He recruits the player to help defend the property using his collection of genetically modified plants. The antagonist is Dr. Albert W. Zomboss, a mad scientist who builds increasingly bizarre armies and mechanical contraptions. The plot unfolds through humorous cutscenes and dialogue that often breaks the fourth wall.
