    About

The Pittsburgh Penguins joined the National Hockey League as an expansion team on June 6, 1967. Robert O'Malley led the group of investors that secured the franchise rights, bringing professional hockey back to the city after a long absence. The team started play in the 1967–68 season at the Civic Arena, a venue fans affectionately called the Igloo. That concrete bowl served as the home rink for forty-three years until the franchise moved to PPG Paints Arena in 2010.

Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle purchased the struggling club from Howard Baldwin in 1999. Lemieux returned to serve as chairman while guiding the team through its most successful modern era. The organization operates as a for-profit business within the NHL structure, competing in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference. Revenue flows from ticket sales, broadcasting deals, merchandise, and corporate sponsorships to support player salaries and arena operations.

Cultural significance runs deep in Pittsburgh. Fans identify strongly with the team's blue and gold colors and the famous Let's Go Pens chant. The roster has featured legends like Jaromir Jagr, Paul Coffey, Evgeni Malkin, and Sidney Crosby. Crosby took over as captain in 2007 and led the squad to three Stanley Cup victories during his tenure. Recent events in October 2026 highlighted both the team's competitive nature and off-ice moments, including the death of former defenseman Lyle Odelein and forward Andrei Kuzmenko changing his jersey number to 62 to honor his late father.

    Mission

To field a competitive professional ice hockey team that represents the city of Pittsburgh with excellence. The organization aims to generate sustainable revenue through sports entertainment while fostering community engagement. They prioritize developing talent through their minor league affiliate system and maintaining a strong connection with local fans.

    History

The franchise began operations in the 1967–68 season alongside five other new teams. Early years struggled significantly as the team posted losing records for much of the decade. Ownership changes occurred frequently before the arrival of Mario Lemieux in 1984. His emergence as a superstar shifted the trajectory of the program immediately.

The first dynasty period started in the early 1990s under coach Scotty Bowman. The team captured the Stanley Cup in 1991 and 1992, establishing themselves as a powerhouse. After a period of decline in the late 1990s, Lemieux bought the team in 1999 to save it from relocation. This move sparked a resurgence that included another championship in 2009 and titles in 2016 and 2017. The 2009 victory marked the first Cup win under the new ownership group.

Recent seasons have seen fluctuating performance levels. The 2026–27 campaign opened with high-scoring games against the Montreal Canadiens. On October 3, 2026, the organization mourned the loss of former defenseman Lyle Odelein. Later that month, forward Andrei Kuzmenko wore number 62 to remember his father. These personal stories continue to weave into the broader narrative of the franchise.
