About
The Philadelphia Eagles are a professional American football team based in Philadelphia, competing in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the National Football Conference (NFC) East division. They play their home games at Lincoln Financial Field in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex, a venue known for its raucous atmosphere and devoted fan base.
The franchise traces its roots to 1933, when a group led by Bert Bell secured the rights to an NFL franchise in Philadelphia, replacing the bankrupt Frankford Yellow Jackets. Since then, the Eagles have become one of the league's most storied franchises, with 32 playoff appearances, 17 division titles (14 in the NFC East), and three pre-merger NFL Championships (1948, 1949, 1960). They have also reached five Super Bowls, winning Super Bowl LII in 2018 and Super Bowl LIX in 2025, both in dramatic fashion.
The team's popularity is reflected in its attendance: every home game has been sold out continuously since 1999. Owned by Jeffrey Lurie, who purchased the franchise in 1994 for $185 million, the Eagles made headlines in December 2024 by becoming one of the first NFL teams to sell an ownership stake to outside investors, parting with 8% of the team at a valuation of $8.3 billion.
History
Bert Bell and his partners paid $2,500 to secure the franchise that would become the Eagles, taking over the remnants of the Frankford Yellow Jackets. The team struggled early, but by the late 1940s, under coach Greasy Neale, they won back-to-back NFL titles in 1948 and 1949, led by Hall of Famers like Steve Van Buren and Chuck Bednarik.
The 1960 championship remains a defining moment: the Eagles beat Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers 17-13, handing Lombardi his only playoff loss as a head coach. That team, quarterbacked by Norm Van Brocklin, is still celebrated in Philadelphia lore.
After decades of ups and downs, the franchise found stability with Andy Reid, who coached from 1999 to 2012, posting 130 regular-season wins and nine playoff appearances. Reid's tenure included five NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl appearance, but the ultimate prize remained elusive.
Doug Pederson finally delivered the first Super Bowl title in 2018, with backup quarterback Nick Foles leading the charge in a 41-33 victory over the Patriots. Then in 2025, under Nick Sirianni and quarterback Jalen Hurts, the Eagles won their second championship, defeating the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX.
