PFL

The Professional Fighters League (PFL) is a global mixed martial arts organization that launched in 2018 after acquiring and rebranding the World Series of Fighting. It originally introduced a sports-season format to MMA, with fighters competing in a regular season, playoffs, and a championship finale. Each weight class champion received a $1 million prize. As of 2025, the league has moved away from this format, now featuring multiple championship belts across various weight classes, with events structured as standard fight cards. The PFL was founded in 2017 by Donn Davis, Russ Ramsey, and Mark Leschly, who acquired the World Series of Fighting promotion and rebranded it. The first season began in June 2018 with 72 fighters across six weight classes competing in a regular season on Thursday nights, followed by single-elimination playoffs on Saturdays, and a championship event on December 31, 2018, at the Hulu Theater in New York. Each champion earned $1 million, with a total $10 million prize pool. The format was a significant departure from traditional MMA promotions, which typically matchmake fights on a per-event basis.

In subsequent years, the PFL expanded its schedule and introduced regional leagues: PFL Europe in 2023, PFL MENA in 2024, and PFL Africa in 2025. In 2024, the organization held a crossover event with Bellator, titled PFL vs. Bellator, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. By 2025, the PFL discontinued its seasonal league format, shifting to a conventional championship belt system across multiple weight classes.
