Peterborough United F.C.

Peterborough United Football Club, known affectionately as "The Posh," is a professional association football club based in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England. The club was founded on May 17, 1934, and has consistently played its home matches at London Road Stadium throughout its existence. Currently, Peterborough United competes in EFL League One, which is the third tier of the English football league system.

The nickname "The Posh" has a history predating the current club, reportedly originating in 1921 with Pat Tirrell, manager of Fletton United. When that club sought to join the Southern League in 1923, it became Peterborough & Fletton United to garner local business support. This entity later went bankrupt in October 1932, and the subsequent Peterborough United adopted the moniker. [edit]

Peterborough United began its competitive journey in the Midland League, achieving significant success with five consecutive league titles from the 1955-56 season through to 1958-59. This period of dominance led to their election into the Football League in 1960, replacing Gateshead. In their first Football League season, 1960-61, they secured the Fourth Division title, setting a league record by scoring 134 goals.

The club has experienced periods of both advancement and decline within the Football League structure. They won another Fourth Division championship in the 1973-74 season. Peterborough United reached the second tier of English football, the Championship, for the first time in the 2008-09 season under the management of Darren Ferguson. Subsequent spells in the Championship occurred during the 2011-13 and 2021-22 seasons. More recently, the club has achieved success in the EFL Trophy, winning the competition in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons, marking the first time any team has secured this trophy in consecutive years.

London Road Stadium, the team's home ground, has a capacity of approximately 15,314. The stadium has been known by various sponsored names, including the ABAX Stadium from November 2014 and, since June 2019, the Weston Homes Stadium following a ten-year sponsorship agreement. The highest attendance recorded at London Road was 30,096, set on February 20, 1965, during an FA Cup match against Swansea Town. [edit]
