    About

Pentagon today stands as one of K-pop's most self-reliant groups, with members deeply involved in songwriting, producing, and choreographing their own material. Leader Hui has penned and produced dozens of tracks for the group and for other artists, earning a reputation as a top-tier idol producer. The group's sound has matured from the energetic, youthful vibes of their early singles like Gorilla and Shine to the more polished, emotional pop-rock of Daisy and the sleek confidence of Feelin' Like.

As of 2026, Pentagon continues as a seven-member act following the departures of Yan An and Yuto. They maintain a devoted international fanbase called UNIVERSE, who have supported them through military enlistments, lineup changes, and a long road to their first music show win. Pentagon's legacy is built on resilience, creative ownership, and a discography that rewards deep listening.

    Formation Story

Pentagon came together through the Mnet survival show Pentagon Maker, which aired in 2016. Ten trainees competed in missions across five categories: vocal/rap, dance, talent, teamwork, and attitude. Each member's progress was tracked on a pentagram diagram, and viewers watched them grow week by week. The show built anticipation for the final lineup, which included all ten participants: Jinho, Hui, Hongseok, Shinwon, Yeo One, Yan An, Yuto, Kino, Wooseok, and E'Dawn.

Jinho brought a unique background to the group. He had trained under SM Entertainment and actually debuted earlier in 2010 as part of SM The Ballad sub-unit under the stage name Jino. His eight-year trainee period gave him exceptional vocal skill. Hui, already a standout producer, would later become the group's creative backbone. The members bonded during the show's grueling challenges, and their chemistry translated into a confident debut stage.

On October 10, 2016, Pentagon dropped their self-titled debut EP with the single Gorilla. The song's pounding beat and powerful choreography announced them as a force in the competitive boy group scene. They followed quickly with the EP Five Senses in December 2016, featuring the addictive Can You Feel It. Japanese debut followed in March 2017, and by 2018 they had their breakout moment with Shine, a track that blended catchy melodies with a playful, self-aware charm.

    Musical Style

Pentagon's music sits at the intersection of energetic K-pop and sophisticated pop songwriting. Their early sound leaned into powerful, percussive dance tracks like Gorilla and Like This, built around heavy bass and sharp choreography. Shine marked a turning point, introducing a lighter, more melodic approach with singalong hooks and clever wordplay. The group never settled into one formula. Daisy brought rock-infused angst with dramatic guitar riffs, while Feelin' Like channeled sleek, modern R&B.

Hui's production fingerprints are all over the discography. He has a gift for constructing songs that feel both radio-friendly and emotionally resonant, often layering contrasting sections within a single track. The group's later albums explored synth-pop, balladry, and even funk, showing a willingness to experiment. Lyrically, Pentagon often writes about self-discovery, perseverance, and the complexities of love, with occasional playful nods to their fandom.

    Cultural Impact

Pentagon's impact extends beyond their music. They were one of the earlier K-pop groups to openly embrace self-production, with members taking charge of composing, writing, and arranging. This creative independence inspired a wave of later groups who wanted similar artistic control. Hui's work on the sub-unit Triple H alongside HyunA and E'Dawn pushed boundaries with its bold, genre-blending sound.

The group also gained visibility through Mnet's Road to Kingdom in 2020, where their performances of Shine + Spring Snow and Block B's Very Good earned praise for their inventive staging and vocal arrangements. Their journey to a first music show win with Daisy in October 2020, after 1,471 days, became a rallying point for fans and a testament to their persistence. Pentagon's story is often cited as an example of how talent and dedication can overcome a slow start.
