Popovich's two Hero of the Soviet Union titles place him among the most decorated Soviet cosmonauts. He was the first Ukrainian in space, a distinction he proudly claimed. His dual missions contributed to early spaceflight milestones, including the first simultaneous crewed orbital flight. His later leadership in cosmonaut training and remote sensing research extended his impact beyond his own flights.

AwardsPopovich was twice honored as Hero of the Soviet Union, first in 1962 after Vostok 4 and again in 1974 after Soyuz 14. Each award came with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal. He also received the title Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR and, in 2005, Ukraine's Order of Yaroslav the Wise (4th class).
