Paula Kahumbu stands as a pioneer in African conservation, achieving what many thought impossible by becoming the first National Geographic Explorer from the continent. Her appointment to the National Geographic Society board of trustees marked a historic shift toward more inclusive representation in global exploration. Being named one of only 33 Global Visionaries in 2026 underscores her unique position as a bridge between science, policy, and public emotion. Her work has fundamentally changed how Kenya and the world view elephant protection, moving it from a niche issue to a matter of national security.

AwardsPaula Kahumbu has received some of the highest honors in the environmental sector.
