Paul Verhoeven's films have been recognized with nine Academy Award nominations, primarily for technical achievements like editing and visual effects. His 1987 sci-fi classic RoboCop won the Oscar for Best Sound Editing. In 2017, his French thriller Elle won both the Golden Globe and the César Award for Best Film, a rare double. The Dutch public voted his 2006 war film Black Book the best Dutch film ever made in a 2008 poll. Verhoeven remains one of the few directors to successfully transition from European art cinema to Hollywood blockbusters and back again.
