Overview
Mobile Police Patlabor, known in Japan as Kidō Keisatsu Patoreibā, is a Japanese science fiction franchise that blends mecha action with workplace comedy and police procedural drama. The name is a portmanteau of "patrol" and "labor," reflecting its core concept: construction robots called Labors are used for heavy engineering, and the police deploy their own Labors to combat crimes involving these machines. Set in a near-future Tokyo, the story follows the misfit officers of Division 2 as they handle Labor-related incidents, from accidents and terrorism to corporate sabotage.
The franchise was created by Headgear, an artist collective formed in the 1980s. Its members included manga artist Masami Yūki, director Mamoru Oshii, screenwriter Kazunori Itō, mecha designer Yutaka Izubuchi, and character designer Akemi Takada. The team wanted to break away from the militarized mecha anime of the era, such as Gundam and Space Runaway Ideon, and instead craft a more grounded, lighter take on giant robots. That vision resonated: the original 1988 OVA series, Patlabor: The Early Days, quickly expanded into manga, three TV series, four feature films, three light novel series, and an animated short compilation. The franchise's appeal lies in its realistic portrayal of Labors as everyday industrial tools, not just weapons, and its focus on the everyday struggles of its police officers, making it a unique entry in the mecha genre.
