Path of Exile 2
"A dark fantasy action RPG with a structured campaign and refined combat."
Overview
Grinding Gear Games released Path of Exile 2 into Early Access on December 6, 2024. This standalone title shifts the franchise focus from endless map grinding to a narrative-driven experience set in the world of Wraeclast. Players navigate a three-act campaign featuring boss encounters that demand precise timing and strategy rather than just statistical optimization.
The game introduces six distinct character classes, each defined by unique active skills and playstyles. Combat relies heavily on real-time reflexes and movement, distinguishing it from slower, menu-heavy role-playing games. A full release version 1.0 is scheduled for December 11, 2026, at which point the title will transition to a fully free-to-play model.
Gameplay
Players engage in real-time combat using a system built around active skill gems and fluid movement. The core loop involves exploring a structured environment divided into three acts, fighting through enemies, and defeating bosses that require specific tactical approaches. Character customization is deep, utilizing a massive passive skill tree and hundreds of available skills that can be modified to suit different builds.
Multiplying players can form parties of up to six individuals to tackle the campaign and endgame content together. The game supports cross-platform play across PC and current-generation consoles. Unlike its predecessor, the progression path feels more linear during the main story segments before opening up into broader sandbox elements.
Story
The narrative unfolds in the grim world of Wraeclast, continuing the lore established in the original 2013 title while introducing new conflicts and historical depths. Developers describe the plot as a brutal exploration of the setting's history, moving away from the open-ended nature of the first game toward a cinematic structure. The story follows various characters as they confront ancient evils and political upheavals within the region.
A major addition for the upcoming 1.0 launch includes the Duelist class, expanding the roster of playable archetypes. This new class brings a fresh perspective to the existing combat mechanics and narrative threads. The writing aims to provide context for the player actions without relying on the fragmented storytelling methods common in the genre.
