About
Founded on February 3, 1908, Panathinaikos emerged from the vision of Giorgos Kalafatis as Podosfairikos Omilos Athinon. What began as a small football club quickly grew into the sporting heart of Athens and eventually became part of the massive Panathinaikos A.O. multi-sport organization. For over a century, the team has stood as a constant in Greek sports, never facing relegation from the top flight since the league's inception.
The club's trophy cabinet tells a story of relentless dominance. They hold the record for twenty Greek Championships and twenty Greek Cups, achieving the domestic double eight times. Their most famous moment came in 1971 when they reached the European Cup Final, becoming the first Greek side to stand on that stage before falling to Ajax. That era produced legends like Alketas Panagoulias and Giorgos Kostikos, who are still remembered for their technical brilliance.
Today, the squad operates out of the Olympic Stadium in Athens, a venue with nearly 70,000 seats that hosted the 2004 Summer Olympics. While the historic Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium remains part of their heritage, the modern matches draw thousands of fans known as the Green Army. Recent seasons have seen them navigate European qualifiers with victories against teams like CSKA 1948 Sofia, proving their status as a regional powerhouse.
History
The roots of Panathinaikos stretch back to 1908 when Giorgos Kalafatis gathered players to form Podosfairikos Omilos Athinon. The name Panathinaikos was adopted shortly after, reflecting the spirit of unity across all of Greece. By the mid-20th century, the club had established itself as a major force, winning its first league titles in the 1930s and expanding its reach beyond just football.
The golden age arrived in the late 1960s and early 1970s under coach Ferenc Puskás and later Alketas Panagoulias. This period produced the club's only European final appearance in 1971. The team defeated strong opponents like Real Madrid and Inter Milan to reach Wembley, where they lost 2-0 to Johan Cruyff's Ajax. Despite the loss, reaching the final cemented their place in continental history.
Domestically, the rivalry with Olympiacos defines the Greek football calendar. Known as the Eternal Derby, this match often decides the championship and draws intense passion from both sets of supporters. The club has maintained an unbroken presence in the top division, a rare feat in a league where financial struggles frequently cause relegations for other clubs.
