Overview
Blizzard Entertainment's Overwatch 2 launched in early access on October 4, 2022, for Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and later Nintendo Switch 2. This free-to-play hero shooter shifts the original Overwatch's 6v6 format to a tighter 5v5 structure, adding new game modes like Push and reworking several classic heroes. Set in a near-future Earth torn by conflict between omnics and humans, the game retains its colorful cast of characters, each with unique abilities, while introducing fresh faces like the support hero Kiriko and the damage dealer Sojourn.
The sequel was initially announced in 2019 with promises of extensive PvE story missions, but Blizzard scrapped those plans in 2023 to focus entirely on player versus player content. This pivot disappointed some fans, but the core competitive experience remained polished, with seasonal updates introducing new heroes, maps, and limited-time events. The game also fully embraced cross-platform play, letting friends on different consoles or PC squad up seamlessly.
Critics gave Overwatch 2 generally favorable reviews, praising its refined gameplay and visual upgrades while noting the loss of PvE ambitions. In February 2026, Blizzard rebranded the game back to simply Overwatch, signaling a shift toward treating it as a forever game with ongoing narrative elements woven into seasonal content and hero releases. The rating is T for Teen due to fantasy violence and mild language.
Gameplay
Overwatch 2 ditches the original's 6v6 setup for a snappier 5v5 format, with each team fielding one tank, two damage, and two support heroes. This change speeds up matches and puts more pressure on individual performance, especially for tanks, who got reworked to be more aggressive. Bastion can now move while shooting in a mobile configuration, Orisa traded her barrier for a javelin that spins to block projectiles, and Doomfist shifted from damage to tank, gaining extra survivability.
New modes keep things fresh. Push has teams fighting to escort a robot that shoves a barrier toward the enemy base, while Flashpoint, added in Season 6, asks players to capture a series of objectives that spawn randomly across the map. The game also introduced a ping system for better communication, a scoreboard that tracks eliminations, damage, and healing instead of the old medal system, and role queue as the default competitive format. Each season drops a new hero, alternating between support, damage, and tank, along with a battle pass offering cosmetic rewards.
Cross-platform play is fully supported, and the game runs at 60 fps on all systems, with 120 fps modes on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The upgraded engine delivers higher-resolution textures and improved lighting, though the Nintendo Switch version makes visual compromises to hit the frame rate target.
Story
After the Omnic Crisis, Overwatch was disbanded under the Petras Act, but old threats lingered. Talon, a terrorist organization led by Doomfist, continued to sow chaos, while Null Sector launched omnic attacks on cities like Paris and Toronto. Former Overwatch members like Winston, Mei, and Tracer reactivated the organization to counter these threats, joined by new heroes like Sojourn, a former captain with a cybernetic railgun, and Kiriko, a shrine maiden who channels healing magic.
The narrative unfolds through seasonal cinematics, hero interactions, and limited-time story missions. In Season 6, players got a taste of PvE with the King's Row mission, where they fought Null Sector alongside new allies. But Blizzard's May 2023 announcement that the full PvE mode with skill trees was canceled shifted the storytelling focus to smaller, ongoing arcs. For example, the introduction of the hero Illari in Season 6 tied into a larger lore about the sun-powered civilization of the Inti Warriors, while Venture, a damage hero added in Season 11, brought a lighthearted archaeological angle.
Blizzard has since committed to weaving narrative beats into every season. The 2026 rebrand to simply Overwatch signaled that the story will keep evolving through hero releases, map lore, and seasonal events, rather than through a single campaign.
