    "Don't run. Hide."

    Overview

Miles Upshur arrives at the abandoned Mount Massive Asylum in Colorado with a camcorder and a story to break, only to find a facility teeming with violent patients under the influence of a hallucinogenic drug called Walrider. Red Barrels designed this 2013 release to strip players of combat abilities, forcing them to survive through stealth and flight while managing dwindling battery life for their night-vision camera.

The narrative unfolds as Miles documents his descent into madness within the decaying corridors, encountering deranged staff like Father Martin and mutated inmates such as The Groom. His journey reveals that Murkoff Pharmaceuticals funded the asylum's "therapeutic community" to test human endurance on the edge of sanity, a secret he records before becoming consumed by the facility's malevolent force.

    Gameplay

Players control Miles Upshur without any weapons or means to fight back, relying entirely on running away, hiding in lockers, or staying still until threats pass. The core mechanic involves using a camcorder equipped with a battery-powered night vision mode to see in pitch-black environments, which drains power rapidly and forces constant scavenging for batteries scattered throughout the map.

Enemy AI reacts to sound and light cues, making noise management critical for survival. Binaural audio directs players toward danger or clues through directional sound, while the lack of a health bar means a single encounter often results in an immediate jump scare death sequence requiring a restart from the last checkpoint.

    Story

Investigative journalist Miles Upshur ignores warnings from his editor at The Wall Street Journal to pursue a tip about unethical experiments at a remote psychiatric facility in Colorado. Upon entering the seemingly abandoned Mount Massive Asylum, he discovers it has been re-opened by Murkoff Pharmaceuticals as a testing ground for the hallucinogenic drug Walrider, which drives inmates into violent psychosis.

Miles navigates the dark, decaying halls while documenting evidence of human experimentation and being hunted by unstable patients and twisted staff members. The story culminates in a tragic revelation where Miles becomes overwhelmed by the facility's influence, ultimately succumbing to the malevolent entity known as the Walrider after failing to escape the asylum.
