Other Mommy

Rob Savage, who directed the inventive found-footage horror Host and the Stephen King adaptation The Boogeyman, returns with a psychological supernatural chiller. Other Mommy adapts a novel by Josh Malerman, the author behind Bird Box. The story centers on a young girl named Bela (Arabella Olivia Clark) whose family home becomes the focus of a sinister entity. This spirit, calling itself Other Mommy, wants to inhabit Bela but cannot force its way in; it requires her consent. Jessica Chastain plays a dual role as Ursula, Bela's mother, and the entity itself, a casting decision that suggests a deeply personal horror. Jay Duplass co-stars as Russ, or Daddo, the father. James Wan produces through his Atomic Monster banner, with cinematography by Lowell A. Meyer. The film is set for release on October 8, 2026.

The production is a collaboration between Blumhouse Productions, Atomic Monster, and Spin a Black Yarn. Specific details about the budget, box office projections, and filming locations have not been disclosed as the film remains in post-production. Bela, a young girl, lives with her parents Ursula and Russ in a spacious but isolated house. Strange occurrences begin soon after the family moves in: objects shift on their own, doors open and close, and a faint, childlike voice calls out from the walls. The voice introduces itself as Other Mommy, claiming to be a variant of Ursula who wants to play with Bela. At first, Bela is curious, but the entity grows more insistent. It can mimic Ursula's appearance and voice, but its movements are wrong, slightly too fast or too fluid.

Ursula and Russ, initially skeptical, become alarmed as Bela's behavior changes. She starts talking to empty corners, has nightmares, and develops scratches on her arms. Ursula researches local folklore and learns that Other Mommy is a parasitic spirit that feeds on a child's belief and love. It cannot enter a child without an invitation, a verbal consent given freely. Once inside, it slowly replaces the child's identity, erasing their memories and personality. The entity preys on Bela's loneliness and her desire for a mother who is more attentive, more permissive than Ursula.

Russ tries to protect the family by reinforcing the house with salt lines and iron, but the entity responds by targeting him directly. It appears as a monstrous version of Ursula, taunting him about his insecurities as a father and husband. The house itself begins to warp, hallways stretching longer, rooms rearranging. Bela, caught between the two mommies, must decide whom to trust. Ursula, desperate to save her daughter, realizes that the only way to stop Other Mommy is to confront the entity on its own terms, inside the psychic space it has created in Bela's mind. The film builds to a tense confrontation where Ursula must prove that her love is stronger than the entity's seductive promises.[edit]
