XPRIZE Foundation

The XPRIZE Foundation is a non-profit that designs and runs large-scale public competitions to spur technological breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity. Founded on the principle that incentivized competition can channel human ingenuity toward solving the world's toughest problems, XPRIZE offers multimillion-dollar prizes to teams that achieve audacious, clearly defined goals. Its first competition, the Ansari XPRIZE for private spaceflight, was won in 2004 by Scaled Composites' SpaceShipOne, a feat that jump-started the commercial space industry, now valued at $596 billion. Since then, the foundation has launched over 30 prizes across five impact areas: Deep Tech and Exploration, Energy and Climate, Food and Water, Health, and Learning and Society. These competitions have engaged more than 35,000 innovators from 173 countries, generated 9,745 patents, created 20,000 jobs, and produced a measurable $31 billion in economic and social value from $519 million in prize capital. The foundation's model has been replicated by governments and philanthropies worldwide, proving that a well-designed prize can unlock solutions that traditional R&D cannot.

XPRIZE operates out of Culver City, California, with additional presence in Frisco, Texas. Its competitions are open to anyone, from garage tinkerers to university labs to multinational corporations. Each prize is structured with a clear, verifiable goal and a deadline, creating urgency and focus. The foundation's approach is rooted in the belief that the day before a breakthrough, it looks like a crazy idea. By providing a platform and financial incentive, XPRIZE turns crazy ideas into reality. The XPRIZE Foundation was conceived in 1994 by Peter Diamandis after he read Charles Lindbergh's account of winning the Orteig Prize. Inspired by the $25,000 prize that launched Lindbergh across the Atlantic in 1927, Diamandis envisioned a similar competition to spur private spaceflight. He co-founded the organization with Gregg Maryniak in 1995. In May 1996, standing under the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Diamandis announced the $10 million Ansari XPRIZE for a reusable manned spacecraft that could reach 100 kilometers altitude twice in two weeks. At the time, he had no funding for the prize. The Ansari family stepped in, and 26 teams from seven countries entered the race.

On October 4, 2004, Mojave Aerospace Ventures, led by Burt Rutan's Scaled Composites and financed by Paul Allen, won the prize with SpaceShipOne. The victory made front-page news and triggered a wave of investment in commercial space. The FAA rewrote its regulations for spaceflight, and within two decades, the commercial space industry grew to a $596 billion market. Building on that success, XPRIZE launched the Progressive Automotive XPRIZE in 2007, challenging teams to build 100-mile-per-gallon cars. Subsequent prizes tackled ocean health, lunar exploration, genomics, and global literacy. In 2020, the foundation launched the $100 million XPRIZE Carbon Removal, funded by Elon Musk, to combat climate change.
