University of Washington
United States"A public research university shaping the Pacific Northwest and beyond"
About
The University of Washington, often called U-Dub, is a public research university that anchors Seattle's University District. Founded in 1861, it's one of the oldest universities on the West Coast, predating Washington's statehood by nearly three decades. Its main campus spans 700 acres and includes more than 500 buildings, with satellite campuses in Tacoma and Bothell.
As a major research institution, UW is known for its strengths in computer science, medicine, and engineering. It's a member of the Association of American Universities and consistently ranks among the top public universities in the United States. U.S. News & World Report places it #42 nationally and #16 among public schools, while also recognizing it as the 12th best university globally. The Princeton Review 2025 named it a top 10 value public college.
The university's annual budget exceeds $9 billion, and it employs over 16,000 staff members. With a student body of more than 50,000, U-Dub attracts learners from every state and over 100 countries. The campus itself is a mix of historic red-brick buildings and modern glass structures, set against the backdrop of Mount Rainier. UW's impact extends far beyond academics, driving Seattle's tech and biotech industries and shaping the region's cultural and intellectual life.
Mission
The University of Washington's mission is to provide an excellent education, conduct groundbreaking research, and serve the public through outreach and engagement. It aims to foster critical thinking, creativity, and a commitment to improving the human condition. By advancing knowledge across disciplines and preparing students for leadership in a global society, UW seeks to be a catalyst for positive change in Washington state and beyond.
The university emphasizes inclusivity, innovation, and sustainability, striving to make higher education accessible to a diverse student body. Through partnerships with local communities and industries, it aims to translate research into real-world solutions that benefit the public.
History
The University of Washington was founded on November 4, 1861, when the territorial legislature approved a charter for a university in Seattle. It opened its doors to a single building on a ten-acre site, with a faculty of one and a student body of 30. The early years were rocky, with low enrollment and financial struggles, but the university survived, moving to its current campus in 1895.
The 20th century brought rapid growth. The university expanded its research mission, becoming a major hub for aerospace and medical research during World War II and the Cold War. The 1960s and 70s saw the establishment of the satellite campuses and a surge in student activism. In the 1990s, UW's computer science program gained international fame, helping fuel Seattle's tech boom.
Today, UW is a global leader in research, with over $1.5 billion in annual research expenditures. It continues to evolve, facing challenges like housing affordability and campus expansion, while maintaining its reputation as a top public university.
