About
Ubisoft is a French video game publisher and developer, one of the largest and most recognizable names in the global gaming industry. Founded in 1986 by the five Guillemot brothers, the company grew from a small distributor importing games from the UK into a powerhouse with studios spanning Montreal, Shanghai, Milan, Bordeaux, and beyond. Its portfolio includes blockbuster franchises like Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, Rainbow Six, and Rayman, which have sold hundreds of millions of copies collectively. Ubisoft is known for its open-world design philosophy, often featuring sprawling maps, climbing mechanics, and systemic gameplay that became industry trends in the 2010s. The company also pioneered the Games-as-a-Service model with Rainbow Six Siege, which launched in 2015 and evolved into a long-running live-service hit. Despite facing financial struggles and workplace controversies in recent years, Ubisoft remains a major force, employing around 12,000 people and continuing to develop high-profile titles. Its headquarters are in Saint-Mandé, France, with Yves Guillemot serving as Chairman and CEO since the company's founding.
Mission
Ubisoft aims to enrich players' lives through innovative and memorable gaming experiences. The company focuses on creativity, collaboration, and pushing the boundaries of interactive entertainment, building worlds that offer deep exploration, compelling stories, and social connections. Its mission extends to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace, though it has faced criticism and reform efforts in this area.
History
Ubisoft's story begins in 1986 in Carentoir, Brittany, where the five Guillemot brothers spotted a price gap: video games cost much more in France than in the UK. They started importing British titles and selling them at lower prices, using profits from the family's agricultural business to fund the venture. The company initially operated as Ubi Soft Entertainment SA, officially incorporating on March 28, 1986.
The first major turning point came in 1995 with the release of Rayman, a platformer created by Michel Ancel. It became a critical and commercial hit, establishing Ubisoft's first original intellectual property. The company went public on the Paris Stock Exchange in 1996, raising funds for expansion. A year later, Ubisoft opened its Montreal studio, which would grow into one of the largest game development houses in the world. In 2000, the company acquired Red Storm Entertainment, gaining the Tom Clancy brand and titles like Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon.
The launch of Assassin's Creed in 2007 changed everything. The game's historical open-world setting and parkour mechanics captivated players, turning it into Ubisoft's flagship franchise. The company followed with Far Cry 3 in 2012, which redefined the open-world shooter genre with its memorable villain and island setting. That same year, Ubisoft launched Uplay, its digital distribution platform (later rebranded as Ubisoft Connect). Rainbow Six Siege debuted in 2015, pioneering the live-service model with regular updates and a dedicated community. Between 2015 and 2018, Ubisoft fought off a hostile takeover attempt by Vivendi, eventually securing investments from Tencent and the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan to maintain independence. Recent years have seen restructuring, layoffs, and a renewed focus on core franchises, with a new subsidiary created in 2025 to oversee Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six.
