Transfermarkt began in May 2000 when Matthias Seidel, a computer engineer from Bremen, created a simple web page to track transfer targets for his local club SV Werder Bremen. Within a year, the site expanded into a public database covering players, coaches, and leagues across German football. The community-driven model took shape early: users contributed data and discussed valuations in forums, and designated godfathers (Paten) made final calls on market values.

In 2008, Axel Springer SE acquired a 51% stake, providing resources for growth. The English-language version launched in 2009, opening the platform to an international audience. Further language versions followed: Dutch and Portuguese in 2014, and eventually 14 languages total. The employee count grew from 3 in 2008 to 8 in 2010, 20 in 2017, and 130 by 2024. The site underwent a major responsive design relaunch in 2014. Simon Torrico joined as co-CEO in 2024, sharing leadership with Thomas Lintz, who had started as a user in 2005.
