    About

Sky Sports is a group of British subscription sports television channels operated by Sky Group, a division of Comcast. Since its launch in 1991, it has become the dominant subscription sports broadcaster in the United Kingdom and Ireland, transforming the landscape of sports broadcasting. The brand operates numerous dedicated channels covering football, cricket, golf, Formula 1, racing, tennis, and more, broadcasting around 30,000 hours of sports coverage annually, with roughly one-third live.

Sky Sports' substantial investment in broadcasting rights reshaped the finances and structure of British sport. Most famously, it played a central role in the creation and rise of the Premier League, which broke away from the established football league structure partly to capitalize on television revenue. The broadcaster holds rights to many of the most prominent sporting events, including Premier League football, England cricket, and the Ryder Cup, and its high-production coverage has set industry standards.

Beyond live sport, Sky Sports operates Sky Sports News, a 24-hour sports news channel launched in 1998, and has ventured into interactive television services and digital platforms. Its influence extends into sports betting through Sky Bet, though this relationship has drawn scrutiny over the promotion of gambling. Sky Sports remains a central institution in British and Irish sports media, wielding significant power in the business of sport.

    Mission

Sky Sports aims to be the dominant subscription sports broadcaster in the UK and Ireland, providing extensive live coverage, analysis, and programming across a wide range of sports. Its mission is to deliver comprehensive, high-production coverage that sets the standard for sports broadcasting, while driving innovation in how fans engage with sport. The broader Sky Group, under CEO Dana Strong, emphasizes connectivity and responsible innovation, including initiatives like Game Changing: How sport gives every girl a better chance.

    History

Sky Sports launched on April 20, 1991, following the merger of Sky Television and British Satellite Broadcasting into British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) in 1990. The new service began with coverage of top-flight football, cricket, golf, and motorsport, quickly establishing itself as a major player in sports broadcasting. Its arrival coincided with a period of upheaval in English football; the Premier League was formed in 1992, with BSkyB securing exclusive live rights in a deal that transformed the sport's finances.

In 1998, Sky Sports News launched as the UK's first 24-hour dedicated sports news channel, with Mike Wedderburn and Kelly Cates delivering the opening words. The channel expanded its reach through interactive services: in 1999, Sky Sports Extra offered the world's first live interactive football coverage, and in 2000, interactive rugby and cricket followed. Sky also moved into digital betting, launching Sky Bet in 2002 and Sky Vegas in 2005, using the red button on Sky remotes to offer interactive wagering.

The 2000s saw Sky Sports secure long-term rights for major events, including the Ryder Cup, European Golf Tours, Australian cricket, and the FA Premier League. In 2000, BSkyB bought the Sports Internet Group for £300 million, signaling its commitment to digital platforms. By 2007, Sky Betting and Gaming faced challenges, laying off around 20% of staff and shifting focus online. Throughout the 2010s and 2020s, Sky Sports continued to dominate, adding channels like Sky Sports F1 and Sky Sports Tennis, and maintaining its position as the leading subscription sports broadcaster in the UK and Ireland.
