Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates and a central venue for daily prayers for the nation's Muslim community. Beyond its religious function, it operates as a cultural and educational institution, welcoming millions of tourists each year. The mosque is open to non-Muslims, serving as a bridge for interfaith understanding and a showcase of Islamic art and architecture.

Construction began in 1994 and concluded in 2007, with the official opening on December 20, 2007. The project was conceived as a tribute to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE, who is buried on the site. The design blends Mamluk, Ottoman, and Fatimid architectural styles, featuring 82 white marble domes, four minarets each rising 107 meters, and the world's largest hand-knotted carpet, which covers 5,627 square meters. The complex spans approximately 290 by 420 meters and can accommodate over 40,000 worshippers.

The mosque's construction involved thousands of artisans and craftsmen, with materials sourced from Italy, Germany, Morocco, India, and other countries. The white marble cladding comes from Greece and North Macedonia, while the gold-plated chandeliers were fabricated in Germany. The mosque has become a symbol of cultural exchange, drawing visitors from all faiths and backgrounds. The idea for a grand mosque in Abu Dhabi was conceived in the 1980s by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who envisioned a structure that would reflect the beauty of Islamic architecture and serve as a symbol of unity. Construction began in 1994, with the foundation laid on the site of a former sand quarry. The project brought together artisans and engineers from around the world, including Italian marble workers, German lighting designers, and Moroccan craftsmen.

The mosque was built using materials sourced from several countries: white marble from Greece and North Macedonia, gold from Italy, and wool and cotton for the carpet from New Zealand and Iran. The carpet, designed by Iranian artist Ali Khaliqi, was woven by 1,200 craftsmen in Iran and took two years to complete. The four minarets, each 107 meters tall, were inspired by different Islamic architectural traditions, including Mamluk, Ottoman, and Andalusian styles.

After 13 years of construction, the mosque was completed in 2007 and opened on December 20 of that year. The first prayer was held that day, attended by dignitaries and worshippers. Sheikh Zayed passed away in 2004 and was buried at the site, making the mosque his final resting place. Since its opening, the mosque has become one of the UAE's most visited landmarks, attracting over 5 million visitors in 2019 alone.
