About
Perched at the foot of Mount Sinai, Saint Catherine's Monastery is the world's oldest continuously inhabited Christian monastery. Founded between 548 and 565 CE under the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, it has stood for nearly fifteen centuries as a living center of faith, scholarship, and pilgrimage. The monastery is named after Saint Catherine of Alexandria, whose relics are said to have been miraculously transported to the site by angels. Today, it remains a functioning Greek Orthodox monastery, home to a small community of monks who maintain its ancient traditions. Its remote location in the rugged Sinai Peninsula of Egypt has preserved not only its architecture but also an extraordinary collection of religious art and manuscripts.
The monastery's library holds over 3,300 manuscripts and 6,000 early printed books, including the Codex Sinaiticus, one of the oldest Bibles in existence. Its walls enclose a treasure trove of icons, mosaics, and liturgical objects, many dating back to the Byzantine era. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its universal cultural and spiritual value. With its stunning setting amid granite mountains and desert valleys, Saint Catherine's draws thousands of visitors and pilgrims each year, offering a glimpse into a living tradition that has weathered empires, wars, and the passage of time.
Mission
Saint Catherine's Monastery exists to maintain the ancient Christian monastic tradition, to serve as a living center of faith and pilgrimage, and to preserve its extraordinary collection of religious art and manuscripts. The monks dedicate themselves to prayer, hospitality, and the care of the monastery's heritage, continuing a way of life established nearly 1,500 years ago. The monastery also functions as a scholarly and cultural institution, safeguarding texts and icons that are vital to understanding early Christianity.
History
The site's religious significance predates the monastery by centuries. The area is identified in the Old Testament as the location where Moses received the Tablets of the Law, and a chapel dedicated to the Burning Bush existed here before Justinian's reign. The monastery itself was built between 548 and 565 CE by order of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, who sought to fortify and Christianize the region. The original monastic community, which had settled in the area as early as the third century, was joined by the newly constructed walls and church.
Over the centuries, the monastery grew into a major pilgrimage destination and a center of Christian scholarship. It survived the rise of Islam, the Crusades, and the Ottoman Empire, partly through its remote location and diplomatic ties. In 2002, the Saint Catherine Area was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing its cultural and spiritual importance. In recent years, the monastery has faced a new challenge: the Egyptian government's push for state control, leading to disputes over legal status and land ownership.
