NESTA

Nesta is a UK-based charity and innovation foundation that designs, tests, and scales new solutions to society's biggest problems. Originally established as the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts, it was launched with a £250 million endowment from the National Lottery, supplemented by an additional £95 million in 2002. The organization uses the interest from this endowment to fund its activities, operating as an independent charity since transitioning from a non-departmental public body.

Headquartered at 58 Victoria Embankment in London, Nesta employs around 306 people and brings together teams of data scientists, designers, and behavioural scientists. It operates through three core missions as part of its 2030 strategy: giving every child a fairer start by age five, halving obesity in the UK, and drastically reducing home carbon emissions. Nesta was created in 1998 following a Labour Party manifesto commitment, enshrined in the National Lottery Act 1998. It launched with a £250 million endowment from the National Lottery, with Lord Puttnam as its founding Chair and Jeremy Newton as its first Chief Executive. Initially a non-departmental public body, its statutory remit was to promote talent, creativity, and innovation in science, technology, and the arts. Its board was appointed by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

In its early years, Nesta focused on funding individual innovators and projects. A pioneering education initiative led to the creation of FutureLab, an independent charity that developed new approaches to learning. The organization later transitioned to become an independent charity, gaining greater freedom to set its own strategy. In 2019, Ravi Gurumurthy became Chief Executive and introduced a sharpened mission-driven approach, concentrating resources on three ambitious goals: early childhood development, obesity reduction, and home carbon emissions. This shift aimed to achieve greater scale and impact by focusing on a few systemic challenges rather than a broad portfolio. [edit]
