    About

Channel 9 in Cedar Rapids has been signing on since October 15, 1953, which makes KCRG-TV one of Iowa's oldest television stations. It has carried ABC programming for essentially its entire life, and the station's call letters reach back even further, to the Cedar Rapids Gazette's radio station that started broadcasting in 1922. That newspaper lineage matters: for decades KCRG was one of the rare American TV stations owned by a local newspaper company, and the newsroom inherited the Gazette's habit of treating Eastern Iowa as its own back yard rather than a distant market.

These days the station serves Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Waterloo, Dubuque and the smaller towns in between from studios on Second Avenue Southeast in downtown Cedar Rapids, with a transmitter near Walker that pushes the signal across a wide stretch of the region. The main channel is ABC plus local newscasts; the digital subchannels carry MyNetworkTV and The CW. Gray Media picked up the station in 2021 when it merged with Quincy Media, folding KCRG into a national group of stations while leaving the local operation largely intact.

What longtime viewers notice is how much of the station's identity sits outside the evening news block. First Alert Weather is the region's default severe-weather source, complete with Doppler radar and the kind of wall-to-wall coverage Eastern Iowans expect when the sky turns. The sports department has a deep bench of University of Iowa coverage, from Hawkeye football and basketball to the annual release of the Iowa men's wrestling TV schedule. Politics gets real airtime too, including candidate debates co-hosted with other Iowa outlets. And the digital side has grown well beyond kcrg.com: there are smart-TV apps, streaming newscasts, a busy YouTube channel, and distribution through platforms like Zeam.

The station marked 70 years on the air in 2023, which in local television terms is a couple of generations of viewers who have never known a morning without channel 9. That kind of tenure is rare, and it explains why KCRG still functions as the region's civic bulletin board as much as a broadcaster.

    Mission

KCRG-TV9 frames its job simply: be Eastern Iowa's trusted local news and weather source. In practice that means a newsroom built around Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Iowa City and Waterloo, covering the county supervisors, city councils, school boards and courthouse stories that bigger outlets skip. The First Alert Weather brand carries a public-safety weight of its own during tornado season and winter storms, when the station's radar and forecasters become the region's early-warning system. The station also treats high school and college sports, especially Hawkeyes athletics, as core coverage rather than filler, and it hosts candidate debates and election-night programming as a civic service. The through-line is local: the station's stated beat is Eastern Iowa "and points in between."

    History

The call letters predate the television station by three decades. KCRG radio signed on in 1922 under the Cedar Rapids Gazette, giving the newspaper a broadcast arm long before television was a commercial medium. When channel 9 signed on October 15, 1953, it grew directly out of that Gazette-owned operation, which is why the station spent so much of its history as a newspaper-owned TV outlet, an arrangement that was never the norm nationally. The ABC affiliation came early and stuck, and over the following decades KCRG built the region's dominant local news operation, with weather and Hawkeye sports as its signature franchises.

Ownership changed hands in stages. The Gazette Company era eventually gave way to Quincy Media, and then in 2021 Gray Television completed its merger with Quincy and absorbed KCRG into its national portfolio. The station stayed put in downtown Cedar Rapids and kept its local branding, but the corporate parent changed the back-office math. In 2023 KCRG marked 70 years on the air, and through the mid-2020s it kept pushing into streaming and smart-TV apps as viewing habits shifted away from the antenna.
