JTBC
South Korea"South Korea's leading cable network for news, drama, and entertainment"
About
JTBC, which stands for Joongang Tongyang Broadcasting Company, launched on December 1, 2011, as one of four new general service cable channels approved by the Korean Communications Commission. Its largest shareholder is JoongAng Holdings, a subsidiary of the JoongAng Group that also publishes the JoongAng Ilbo newspaper, with a 25% stake. The channel was formed by merging JoongAng Ilbo's existing cable broadcasting assets with new infrastructure, creating a full-fledged generalist broadcaster under the Broadcasting Act.
JTBC quickly carved out a reputation for itself, especially in news and drama. Its news division, anchored by flagship programs like JTBC Newsroom and Political Desk, has been praised for independent reporting and has broken major stories, including coverage of the 2016-2017 presidential impeachment scandal. In drama, JTBC produced some of the highest-rated shows in Korean cable history, such as Sky Castle (2018) and The World of the Married (2020), the latter peaking at a 28.4% viewership rating. Variety hits like Knowing Bros and I Live Alone have become cultural staples.
Headquartered at the JoongAng Ilbo building in Sunhwa-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul, JTBC operates additional production studios in Sangam-dong and maintains a news bureau in Washington, D.C. The network employs around 1,200 to 1,500 staff and generates estimated annual revenue of ₩400-500 billion (USD $300-380 million) through advertising, drama exports, and subscription fees. JTBC has expanded into digital with its OTT platform JTBC Studio and launched JTBC America for North American distribution in 2024.
Mission
JTBC's mission is to deliver trustworthy news, high-quality entertainment, and innovative content that serves the public interest, while competing with South Korea's major terrestrial broadcasters. It aims to be a credible news source and a leading producer of Korean dramas and variety shows for both domestic and global audiences.
History
JTBC's roots trace back to 1995, when JoongAng Ilbo began operating a cable channel. In 2010, the Korean Communications Commission approved four new general programming licenses, and JTBC won one alongside TV Chosun, Channel A, and MBN. The network officially launched on December 1, 2011, merging JoongAng Ilbo's existing broadcasting assets with new facilities. Early on, JTBC focused on building its news credibility, with its coverage of the 2016 presidential impeachment scandal earning widespread trust. The drama division hit its stride in 2018 with Sky Castle, a satirical look at elite education that drew record ratings. The World of the Married followed in 2020, becoming the highest-rated drama in Korean cable history at 28.4%. Variety shows like Knowing Bros (2015) and I Live Alone (2013) became long-running hits. In 2021, JTBC secured a 10-year English Premier League broadcasting rights deal. The network launched its OTT platform JTBC Studio in 2020 and expanded to North America with JTBC America in 2024.
