Jharkhand Public Service Commission
India"Gateway to Civil Services in Jharkhand"
About
The Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) stands as the constitutional body responsible for recruiting candidates to a wide range of government posts across the Indian state of Jharkhand. Established on November 15, 2000, immediately following the creation of the state from 18 districts of Bihar, the commission filled a critical administrative vacuum. Its primary mandate involves conducting competitive examinations and interviews that serve as the entry point for roles such as Deputy Collector, Superintendent of Police, and other key positions within the Jharkhand Administrative Services.
Operating autonomously under the Government of Jharkhand, JPSC functions from its headquarters in Ranchi. The organization manages the flagship Combined Civil Services Examination, a rigorous three-stage process comprising Preliminary, Mains, and Personality Test phases. Thousands of aspirants compete annually for these limited spots, making the commission a central figure in the state's governance and employment landscape. Beyond civil services, the body handles recruitment for Engineering, Finance, Legal, Medical, and Academic sectors, ensuring a merit-based selection process that strengthens public administration across all 18 districts.
Mission
JPSC aims to conduct fair and transparent competitive examinations and interviews for state civil services and other posts within its jurisdiction. The core objective is to identify the most capable individuals for administrative roles, thereby strengthening public administration in Jharkhand. By adhering to principles of meritocracy and continuously adapting to technological advancements through digital portals, the commission strives to serve aspirants efficiently while maintaining the integrity of the selection process.
History
The story of JPSC begins with the birth of Jharkhand itself. On November 15, 2000, the state was carved out of Bihar, merging 18 districts into a new administrative entity. With a new state came the urgent need for a dedicated public service commission to handle recruitment for the newly formed government. Thus, JPSC was established, taking on the responsibility of conducting examinations and interviews for a variety of government posts.
From its early days, the commission evolved to meet the demands of a growing state. It introduced online application systems to simplify the process and regularly updated examination patterns. A significant operational milestone arrived in 2025 with the conduct of the Combined Civil Services Regular-2025 Main Examination, followed by the release of the 2026 notification under Advertisement No. 01/2026, which announced 103 vacancies for posts including Deputy Collector and Superintendent of Police. These activities underscored JPSC's ongoing role as a dynamic institution in Jharkhand's governance.
The organization faced its most defining challenge in mid-2026. Following allegations of paper leaks in both Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission and JPSC exams, thousands of students launched protests demanding transparency. The situation escalated when the state government ordered the cancellation of three major examinations. This decision triggered intense judicial scrutiny, with the High Court staying the cancellations and later directing the government to appoint a new leadership team within two months after all three serving members resigned amid CID summons and public pressure.
