The institution began life in 1851 when the Florida Legislature chartered the East Florida Seminary. Over the decades, the school evolved through several name changes and reorganizations before achieving its current status. A pivotal moment occurred in 1947 following the merger with the Florida State College for Women, which established the modern Florida State University. Recent events have tested the university's operational resilience. In early September 2026, a main breaker failure caused a significant power outage at Doak Campbell Stadium during a football game against Southern Methodist University. The disruption delayed the match for nearly two hours and forced the game to resume without replays. Officials confirmed the electrical failure was the primary cause, sparking media discussion regarding infrastructure reliability and coaching pressure. Despite such challenges, the university continues to expand its cultural footprint. The Marching Chiefs were selected in September 2026 to perform in the 2027 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
