About
Euronews is a pan-European television news network that launched on January 1, 1993, as a direct alternative to CNN and BBC World News. Headquartered in Lyon, France, with a major hub in Brussels, it broadcasts in 12 languages and reaches over 400 million households in 160 countries. The network was founded by a consortium of 11 public-service broadcasters from across Europe, including France Télévisions, RAI, and ARD, all coordinated by the European Broadcasting Union. Its core mission has always been to cover world news from a European angle, reflecting the continent's diverse political and cultural perspectives rather than an Anglo-American one.
Euronews is known for its distinctive visual style and its commitment to fact-based, impartial journalism. Unlike many competitors, it does not have opinionated anchors or pundits; instead, it relies on a straightforward, voice-over format with correspondents reporting from bureaus in London, Berlin, Moscow, Washington D.C., and other capitals. The network has evolved significantly since its founding, launching dedicated verticals like Euronews Green (climate), Euronews Next (tech and science), and Euronews Culture (arts). In 2022, majority ownership shifted to Alpac Capital, a Portuguese investment fund, after a period under NBC News. As of 2024, Euronews is undergoing a digital transformation, prioritizing its website and mobile app over linear TV to attract younger audiences.
Mission
Euronews aims to provide impartial, multilingual news coverage from a European perspective, fostering a shared public sphere across the continent. It seeks to bridge cultural and linguistic divides by delivering the same factual content in 12 languages, enabling viewers from Portugal to Poland to access consistent reporting on global events. The network is committed to fact-based journalism free from editorializing, and it prioritizes coverage of European Union affairs, climate change, technology, and culture to inform and connect a diverse international audience.
History
Euronews was born out of a desire for a truly European news voice. In the late 1980s, several public broadcasters felt that global news was dominated by American and British outlets. The European Broadcasting Union spearheaded the project, and on January 1, 1993, the channel went live from its Lyon headquarters. Initially broadcasting in five languages (English, French, German, Spanish, Italian), it expanded to 12 over the next two decades. A major milestone came in 1997 when it switched to 24-hour broadcasting, and in 2008 it relaunched with a modern visual identity and a stronger digital footprint.
The network faced financial challenges in the 2010s, leading to a 25% stake sale to NBC News in 2016. That partnership helped Euronews reach global audiences but also sparked debate about its independence. In 2022, NBC sold its shares to Alpac Capital, a Portuguese fund with ties to Hungary's Fidesz government, raising concerns about potential editorial bias. Euronews maintained it would remain impartial. Under new CEO Guillaume Dubois, appointed in 2023, the network cut around 30-40 jobs and refocused on digital-first content, launching verticals like Euronews Green and Euronews Next to attract niche audiences.
