Emory Healthcare
United States"Georgia's largest integrated academic health system"
About
Emory Healthcare operates as the primary clinical arm of Emory University, functioning as the largest integrated academic health system in the state of Georgia. While its institutional roots trace back to 1905 with the founding of Grady Memorial Hospital and the establishment of the Emory School of Medicine in 1915, the organization formally consolidated under the unified brand "Emory Healthcare" in 2011. This restructuring merged previously separate hospitals, clinics, and physician groups into a single entity designed to standardize patient care and enhance research collaboration across the region.
The system serves as the principal teaching hospital for the Emory University School of Medicine, bridging the gap between advanced medical research and direct patient treatment. Its footprint extends well beyond the main campus in Atlanta, managing eleven distinct hospital locations and more than 250 outpatient sites throughout the state. These facilities range from acute care centers like Emory University Hospital and Emory Johns Creek Hospital to specialized institutes such as the Emory Winship Cancer Institute. Recent strategic moves include expanding presence into suburban retail spaces like Northlake Mall and maintaining operations in Houston, Texas.
Mission
The organization aims to deliver compassionate, world-class patient care while driving innovation through rigorous research and education. As an academic medical center, it focuses on training the next generation of physicians, nurses, and researchers. The system strives to improve community health across Georgia by fostering a culture of excellence, integrity, and compassion within its clinical and educational programs.
History
The lineage of this health system begins in 1905 when Grady Memorial Hospital opened, eventually becoming the flagship public hospital for the region. Academic foundations were laid in 1915 with the founding of the Emory School of Medicine. Over the subsequent decades, the university expanded its clinical reach by integrating key institutions, including the Emory Clinic founded in 1934 and Emory University Hospital which opened in 1976.
A significant structural shift occurred in 2011 when Emory University officially reorganized its clinical operations into a single entity named Emory Healthcare. This move transformed a collection of affiliated hospitals into a fully integrated academic health system. The goal was to streamline operations, enhance research collaboration, and ensure standardized patient care across the state. In recent years, the system has continued to evolve, launching the first comprehensive Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) program in Georgia in 2026 and expanding its physical footprint with a $95 million purchase at Northlake Mall.
