    About

The Dodgers–Yankees rivalry is not an organization in any conventional sense. It is a competitive relationship between two Major League Baseball franchises, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees, that has produced twelve World Series meetings, five more than any other pairing in the sport's history. The two clubs first met for the championship in 1941, when both were based in New York City, and they contested seven Fall Classics between that year and 1956. The Yankees won six of those seven, including five in a row from 1949 through 1953. The Dodgers' only victory in that span came in 1955, when they finally beat the Yankees for the first championship in franchise history.

When the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles in 1958, the rivalry became a coast-to-coast affair. The clubs have met five more times in the World Series since then: 1963, 1977, 1978, 1981, and 2024. The Yankees won the first two of those post-move meetings and the 1977 and 1978 series; the Dodgers took 1963, 1981, and 2024. Overall the Yankees hold an eight-to-four edge in the twelve Series. The 2024 meeting, won by the Dodgers in five games, was the first since 1981 and drew some of the largest television audiences for a World Series in recent years.

Interleague play, introduced in 1997, has kept the teams in each other's schedules during the regular season, though the rivalry's weight remains concentrated in October. The two franchises are among the highest-valued in MLB, and their caps and logos are worn internationally as fashion items by people who may never watch a game. The rivalry has no separate legal entity, staff, or headquarters. Each club maintains its own ownership, front office, and stadium: Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles and Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

    Mission

The rivalry has no formal mission statement. Its purpose, insofar as one can be ascribed, is the pursuit of championships by each club, and the twelve World Series meetings are the record of that pursuit. The relationship matters because it sets the Yankees' sustained success against the Dodgers' long wait for a title after leaving Brooklyn, and because those October series have repeatedly served as the sport's biggest stage.

    History

The first World Series between the clubs came in 1941, when the Brooklyn Dodgers won the National League pennant and met a Yankees team that had won four of the previous five championships. The Yankees won that series in five games. The pattern held for more than a decade. Between 1941 and 1956 the teams met seven times, and the Yankees won six. The 1947 series was the first to feature Jackie Robinson, who had broken the color barrier that April. The 1952 and 1953 series both went to the Yankees in seven and six games respectively, and the 1955 series finally went Brooklyn's way, with the Dodgers winning in seven games for their only championship while based in Brooklyn.

The Dodgers' move to Los Angeles in 1958 changed the geography but not the frequency. The clubs met again in 1963, when the Dodgers swept the Yankees in four games behind Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale. The 1977 and 1978 series produced consecutive Yankees titles, the latter after New York won four straight games following a two-game deficit. The 1981 series went to the Dodgers in six games. Then came a forty-three-year gap before the 2024 World Series, which the Dodgers won in five games. The twelve meetings are the most between any two franchises, and the eight Yankees victories are the most by one club over another in World Series play.
