Daily Mirror
United Kingdom"Britain's voice of the left-leaning tabloid press"
About
The Daily Mirror is a British national daily tabloid newspaper, one of the most established and widely read popular newspapers in the United Kingdom. Founded in the early twentieth century, it has a long history as a leading voice in British popular journalism and is part of a major newspaper group under a larger media parent company. Over its long existence the paper has been known for its tabloid format and its mix of news, politics, celebrity coverage, sport and entertainment aimed at a broad, mass-market readership. Distinctively among major British tabloids, the Daily Mirror has traditionally taken a left-leaning, working-class-oriented editorial stance, generally supporting the Labour Party and positioning itself as a champion of ordinary people, in contrast to some of its more right-leaning tabloid rivals. This political orientation has been a defining feature of its identity throughout much of its history. At various points the paper has been published under a slightly shortened title, and it has a Sunday sister publication. Like much of the print newspaper industry, the Daily Mirror has experienced significant declines in circulation in the digital era as readers have shifted to online sources, prompting it to expand its presence online. Despite these challenges, it remains a prominent and recognizable title in British media. Established, popular and politically distinctive, the Daily Mirror stands as one of the leading tabloid newspapers in the United Kingdom and a notable voice in British popular journalism.
The paper has been involved in major campaigns, such as the fight for justice for the victims of the Hillsborough disaster and the push for a national minimum wage. Its investigative reporting has uncovered scandals and held power to account, though it has also faced criticism for sensationalism. The Daily Mirror's digital platform, mirror.co.uk, attracts millions of monthly visitors and offers breaking news, opinion, and lifestyle content. The paper also produces supplements like Mirror Magazine and Mirror Football. As part of Reach plc, it shares resources with sister titles including the Sunday Mirror and Daily Express.
Mission
The Daily Mirror's mission is to provide news and entertainment for a broad, working-class readership, championing the causes of ordinary people and holding the powerful to account. It aims to be a progressive voice in British media, supporting social justice, equality, and the Labour Party's values. The paper seeks to inform, engage, and empower its audience through a mix of hard news, investigative journalism, and accessible features.
History
Alfred Harmsworth, later Lord Northcliffe, launched the Daily Mirror on 2 November 1903 as a newspaper for women, staffed by women. The original concept failed to attract readers, and Harmsworth relaunched the paper in 1904 with a new formula: a picture-heavy, mass-market tabloid aimed at a general working-class audience. This turnaround proved successful, and the Daily Mirror quickly became one of Britain's most popular newspapers.
During World War I, the paper served as a major source of news and propaganda, reaching a circulation of over one million. In the 1930s, under editor William Connor, it adopted a strong anti-appeasement stance against Nazi Germany. The paper supported Labour's landslide victory in 1945 and continued to align with the left. Its circulation peaked in the 1960s at over five million daily copies, making it the best-selling daily newspaper in Britain at the time.
The 1970s brought intense competition from Rupert Murdoch's The Sun, which lured away readers with a more sensational style. The Daily Mirror's circulation declined steadily thereafter. In 1999, the paper was sold to Richard Desmond, who owned it until 2005. The phone hacking scandal erupted in 2011, revealing that Mirror journalists had hacked voicemails, leading to the resignation of editor Piers Morgan. In 2020, Trinity Mirror rebranded as Reach plc, consolidating the Daily Mirror with other titles. As of 2025, the paper faces ongoing challenges from digital disruption, but remains a significant force in British journalism.
