Carnegie Mellon University

Carnegie Mellon University, commonly known as CMU, is a private research university located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1900 by industrialist Andrew Carnegie as the Carnegie Technical Schools, the institution initially focused on vocational training for the children of steelworkers. It evolved into the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1912, offering four-year degrees. The modern university was formed in 1967 through a merger with the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research, established in 1913 by Andrew Mellon and Richard B. Mellon.

Today, CMU is recognized globally for its programs in computer science, engineering, business, and the arts, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research and innovation. The university operates a main campus in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood, along with satellite campuses in Silicon Valley, California, and Doha, Qatar. Its endowment exceeds $3 billion, and it enrolls over 15,000 students. CMU consistently ranks among the top 30 universities worldwide, known for its rigorous academics and entrepreneurial culture.

In July 2026, CMU's AI Science Foundry was selected by the National Science Foundation to help build a national infrastructure for AI-enabled scientific discovery. Researchers also led three Department of Energy Genesis Mission awards to advance AI in science. Meanwhile, the university partnered with Pittsburgh-based Carnegie Foundry to boost drone manufacturing for defense, and Laurence Ales was named interim dean of the Tepper School of Business after Isabelle Bajeux-Besnainou's departure. Andrew Carnegie founded the Carnegie Technical Schools in 1900 with a $1 million gift, aiming to provide practical education for the children of Pittsburgh's working class. The school opened in 1905 with programs in science and technology. In 1912, it was renamed the Carnegie Institute of Technology and began granting four-year degrees.

The Mellon Institute of Industrial Research, founded in 1913 by Andrew Mellon and Richard B. Mellon, focused on industrial research and later merged with the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1967 to form Carnegie Mellon University. This merger combined a strong technical tradition with deep research capabilities.

CMU established the Robotics Institute in 1979, the first of its kind in the world, and launched the School of Computer Science in 1988. The university opened a campus in Doha, Qatar, in 2004, and a Silicon Valley campus in 2002. In recent years, CMU has become a leader in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and autonomous systems, with its AI Science Foundry selected by the NSF in 2026 to build national AI infrastructure.
