The Boston Bruins were founded in 1924 as an expansion franchise of the National Hockey League, making them the oldest United States-based team in the NHL and one of the league's "Original Six" franchises. Charles Adams, a Vermont-born businessman and enthusiastic hockey fan who owned a chain of grocery stores, established the team. He hired the legendary Art Ross as the team's first general manager, a decision that proved pivotal to the franchise's early success. The team's unique name originated from a secretary at one of Adams's grocery stores who suggested "Bruins", an old Dutch word for "brown" dating to the late 15th century, after an initial contest failed to produce appealing alternatives. The original uniform colors were brown and gold, switching to the iconic black and gold in 1934.

The Bruins won their first Stanley Cup in the 1928-29 season, just five years after their founding. Additional championships followed in 1938-39, 1940-41, 1969-70, 1971-72, and 2010-11, bringing the total to six Stanley Cups. The team also has four conference championships and 25 division championships. During the 2022-23 season under head coach Jim Montgomery, the Bruins set historic regular-season records for most wins (65) and most points (135) in NHL history, though they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Florida Panthers in game seven.
