    About

Balenciaga is a luxury fashion house founded in 1919 by Spanish couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga in San Sebastián, Spain. Now headquartered in Paris and owned by the Kering group, the house designs and markets ready-to-wear clothing, footwear, handbags, accessories, and licensed fragrances. Renowned for its architectural silhouettes and technical mastery, Balenciaga has been a defining force in high fashion for over a century. Under the creative direction of Demna Gvasalia from 2015 to 2025, the brand became a global cultural phenomenon by fusing streetwear with couture, producing viral designs like the Triple S sneaker and the Speed trainer, and staging provocative runway shows that often blurred the line between fashion and performance art. In 2025, Italian designer Pierpaolo Piccioli took over as creative director, signaling a new chapter.

The brand operates 282 stores worldwide as of 2025, with a strong digital presence and a history of engaging with new technologies, including accepting cryptocurrency payments in 2026. Balenciaga has been both celebrated and criticized for its boundary-pushing approach; a 2022 advertising campaign involving children and teddy bears in BDSM-inspired gear sparked widespread backlash and led to legal action. Despite such controversies, the house remains one of the most influential names in luxury fashion, balancing its heritage of craftsmanship with a relentless drive for innovation.

    Mission

Balenciaga's mission is to challenge and redefine the conventions of luxury fashion through avant-garde design, technical innovation, and cultural relevance. The house aims to create clothing and accessories that reflect the spirit of the times, blending its couture heritage with a contemporary, often disruptive, aesthetic. It seeks to engage with a global audience through both physical retail and digital platforms, while maintaining the highest standards of craftsmanship and quality.

    History

Cristóbal Balenciaga opened his first boutique in San Sebastián, Spain, in 1919, later expanding to Madrid and Barcelona. He was already a celebrated couturier in Spain when the Spanish Civil War forced him to relocate to Paris in 1937, where he opened a couture house at 10 Avenue George V. His Paris debut was an immediate success, and he quickly gained a reputation for his impeccable tailoring and sculptural forms. Balenciaga introduced the tunic dress in 1955, the sack dress in 1957, and the baby doll dress in 1958, all of which liberated women from the constricted silhouettes of the 1950s. He was known for his reclusive nature and his insistence on absolute control over his work, rarely giving interviews and forbidding press sketches of his collections until they were shown.

In 1968, Balenciaga closed his couture house, retiring from fashion entirely. The brand lay dormant until 1986, when it was acquired by Jacques Bogart S.A., which relaunched it as a ready-to-wear and accessories label. In 2001, the Kering group (then PPR) bought Balenciaga and appointed Nicolas Ghesquière as creative director. Ghesquière's tenure (1997-2012) revitalized the house, blending futuristic elements with the founder's architectural legacy. Alexander Wang succeeded Ghesquière from 2012 to 2015, bringing a more streetwear-infused aesthetic. In 2015, Demna Gvasalia took over, and his provocative, oversized designs and viral marketing strategies catapulted Balenciaga to the forefront of fashion culture. In July 2025, Pierpaolo Piccioli became creative director, marking a new chapter for the historic house.
