Apple Music
United States"A premium music streaming service from Apple, deeply integrated across its ecosystem."
About
Apple Music is a media player application and music streaming service developed by Apple Inc., the American multinational technology company. It operates as part of Apple's Services division, headquartered in Cupertino, California. The service offers on-demand access to a vast library of songs, albums, and playlists for subscribers, alongside curated playlists, radio programming, exclusive content, and high-quality audio options like Lossless and Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos.
Apple Music's roots stretch back to 2000 with the unveiling of iTunes, which revolutionized digital music management. The streaming service itself emerged from Apple's $3 billion acquisition of Beats Electronics in 2014, which included the Beats Music subscription service. Apple Music officially launched on June 30, 2015, consolidating Beats Music's subscriber base and infrastructure. It quickly grew to 11 million subscribers in its first year, despite early criticism of its user interface, which prompted a major redesign around one year after launch.
The service is available in over 100 countries and works across Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV) as well as Android and web browsers. Its deep integration with Apple's hardware ecosystem makes it a convenient choice for millions of users, while its exclusive artist partnerships and radio stations, including Apple Music 1 (formerly Beats 1), have made it a cultural hub for music discovery and pop culture. Apple Music competes head-to-head with Spotify, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music, and is recognized as one of the leading global streaming platforms.
Mission
Apple Music aims to provide a premium, subscription-based music streaming experience that is deeply integrated with Apple's hardware and software ecosystem. Its broader purpose is to strengthen Apple's ecosystem by keeping users invested in iPhones, AirPods, Macs, and other Apple products, thereby increasing customer lifetime value. Jimmy Iovine, co-founder of Beats Electronics, envisioned Apple Music as a cultural hub and essential meeting place for everything related to pop culture.
History
The story of Apple Music begins long before its 2015 launch. In 2000, Apple unveiled iTunes, a music management application that let users organize their digital music libraries and sync them to iPod devices. iTunes changed the way people bought music, especially with the 2003 launch of the iTunes Store, which offered individual song downloads for 99 cents. That store became the world's largest music retailer by 2010.
By the early 2010s, streaming was overtaking downloads. Apple acquired Beats Electronics for $3 billion in 2014, gaining Beats Music, a subscription streaming service with about 250,000 subscribers. The acquisition also brought key talent, including Jimmy Iovine, Dr. Dre, and radio host Zane Lowe. Apple Music officially launched on June 30, 2015, absorbing Beats Music's subscribers and infrastructure. The initial interface drew criticism for being cluttered, but a major update in 2016 streamlined the design and improved navigation.
Apple Music grew steadily, reaching 11 million subscribers by its first anniversary. The service launched Apple Music 1 (originally Beats 1) in 2015, a 24/7 live radio station broadcasting from Los Angeles, New York, London, and Nashville, featuring hosts like Zane Lowe and Ebro Darden. In 2023, Apple introduced Apple Music Classical, a separate app for classical music enthusiasts, and launched new global divisions focused on publishing and charts in 2024.
