Adam Opel started a small sewing machine shop in Rüsselsheim, Germany, in 1862. That humble beginning evolved into one of Europe's most significant automotive forces. The company built its first car in 1899 and quickly became known for producing reliable vehicles for the masses. For nearly a century, American giant General Motors held the reins, shaping Opel's identity from 1929 until 2017. Today, the brand belongs to Stellantis following a major acquisition by the PSA Group.[edit]
